Content gaps are where competitor traffic grows without you noticing
Start with 3-5 direct competitors and map their main pages against your own. Look for missing topic clusters, not just missing keywords: comparison pages, use-case pages, FAQs, “best for” pages, and problem/solution articles. A gap is only useful if it connects to a page type that searchers already expect.
Check intent, not volume. If competitors rank with thin pages for “how to choose,” “alternatives,” or “vs” queries, they are often covering decision-stage demand you skipped. These pages usually sit near money pages, so missing them can weaken the whole cluster.
Use a simple matrix:
• competitor page exists, your page missing
• competitor covers a subtopic, your page stays generic
• competitor has internal links into the cluster, you link nowhere
Then sort gaps by proximity to your existing content. The easiest wins are pages that can link to a hub, support a product/category page, or fill a subtopic inside an active cluster. Ignore topics that would need a brand-new site structure just to make sense.
Build the gap only if you can place it inside a topical map. Otherwise you are adding isolated pages, not authority.

Facebook

How to use Search Console to find topic clusters your site has not built out yet
Search Console helps spot incomplete coverage, not just winning keywords. Export queries and pages, then group related terms by intent and topic. For each cluster, note impressions, clicks, position, CTR, and the page receiving visibility.
Watch for four signals:
— Related queries earn impressions, but no page ranks consistently: build a focused hub or missing support page.
— One page ranks for several different intents: separate the intents and link the pages together.
— Impressions are strong but CTR is weak: align the title and snippet with the dominant intent.
— Multiple pages rank for the same terms: clarify their roles or consolidate overlap.
Start with clusters that have impressions and partial rankings. They show demand and usually need better coverage, internal links, or intent alignment—not a random batch of articles. Map one hub, supporting pages, and the links between them.
Treat the report as a coverage audit: identify where Google already sees relevance, then build the missing structure around that evidence.

Expand too early, and you blur the map; stay narrow too long, and you cap growth
A topic should expand only when the current cluster is already doing its job: the core page ranks or gets impressions, supporting pages cover the obvious subtopics, and new content ideas keep pointing to the same unanswered intent. If every article feels like a close cousin of the main theme, you are still inside the lane.
Expand when the new topic shares the same audience, the same search intent family, and at least part of the same linking structure. That usually means one hub page can connect both areas without looking forced. If you need a brand-new site section, a new content model, or a different buyer mindset, the topic is probably too far away.
Stay narrow when the cluster still has gaps: missing comparisons, use cases, beginner questions, or internal links that would strengthen the main hub. Narrow focus wins when one subject can be made deeper, clearer, and more complete without spreading authority across weak pages. 🚫
A simple test: if the adjacent topic can be explained in one sentence that starts with “another angle of the same problem,” it may belong. If the sentence starts with “a different problem for a different reader,” keep it separate.
Use the map, not the content calendar, to decide. Expand only when the next page makes the cluster stronger; otherwise, go deeper on the subject you already own.

Build a topical map from one seed term before you write a single draft
Start with one clear seed topic, then split it into intent buckets: definitions, comparisons, use cases, problems, tools, and process. If the seed is “email marketing,” the map should not stop at “email marketing tips” — it should branch into welcome flows, list hygiene, segmentation, deliverability, copywriting, metrics, and common mistakes.
Next, assign each cluster a role. One hub page should cover the whole subject at a high level; supporting pages should handle one question, one problem, or one decision each. Keep the pages narrow enough to answer fast, but related enough that internal links feel natural, not forced. 🔗
A simple check: if two URLs would attract the same search intent, merge them. If a page needs five unrelated headings to stay useful, it is probably too broad. If a topic can support examples, comparisons, and troubleshooting, it can usually support a cluster of articles.
Build the map in this order: seed topic → subtopics → search intents → page types → internal links. That sequence keeps the plan tied to user needs, not just keyword lists.
A good topical map does not chase volume first; it protects relevance first. If every page has a clear job, the site becomes easier to expand, easier to link, and much harder to confuse.

A good topical map does not chase volume first; it protects relevance first. If every page has a clear job, the site becomes easier to expand, easier to link, and much harder to confuse.
From one seed topic to a topical map that actually covers the subject
Start with one seed topic, then split it into intent layers: definition, comparison, how-to, troubleshooting, tools, examples, and best practices. If a page can answer only one small question, it belongs inside a cluster, not as the main hub.
Next, build the map from entities, not just keywords. List the core terms, related subtopics, pain points, and recurring questions a reader would have before and after the main search. This keeps the plan aligned with real coverage instead of random article ideas.
A clean topical map usually has three levels:
• Hub page: the broad subject
• Cluster pages: each major subtopic
• Supporting pages: narrow questions, fixes, and use cases
Before writing, check internal logic. Every cluster page should connect back to the hub, and related clusters should link to each other where it helps the reader. If two pages answer the same intent, merge them. If a section has no search value or user need, cut it.
Build the map first, then write. A good topical plan reduces overlap, makes internal linking easier, and gives each page a clear job.

Topical authority is measured by behavior, not by a vanity score
If a site owns a topic, its pages start ranking for related queries without constant link pushing. To check that, look at proxies that reflect real coverage: search visibility across the cluster, not one URL; the number of pages earning impressions for semantically close queries; and how often internal links move users from a broad hub to deeper pages.
Useful proxies:
• query spread: are many pages pulling traffic from the same subject area?
• ranking diversity: do different intent layers show up, from definitions to comparisons to problem-solving?
• internal navigation depth: can a user reach supporting pages in 1-2 clicks from the hub?
• content overlap: are pages reinforcing each other, or competing for the same term?
Avoid proxy traps. Raw traffic can be misleading, because one viral article can hide weak topical depth. Backlink counts are also noisy when they point to a single page but not the cluster. Even impressions alone can fool you if they come from loosely related queries that don’t build authority around a clear subject.
A strong topical map usually shows balanced coverage: one hub, multiple supporting pages, clean intent separation, and steady growth in related query reach. If those pieces are missing, the site may rank, but it is not owning the topic.
Check the cluster, not the headline page. If the supporting pages are thin or isolated, topical authority is still being built.
