TIL in the 1954 Commonwealth Games, marathon runner Jim Peters led into the finishing stadium by 17 minutes. But it took him 11 minutes to cover just 200m of the lap and he fell 7 times before being stretched off the track. He woke up in hospital believing he had won the race; he never raced again.

TIL that Elyesa Bazna was a Turkish spy who worked for the Nazis during World War II but provided so much intel they distrusted him and ignored most of it. The Allies failed to catch him, but he was eventually arrested after the war when it turned out that the Nazis had paid him with fake money.

TIL in 1961, the Prime Minister of Japan, Nobusuke Kishi, was visited by the new leader of South Korea, Park Chung Hee. Park, a former collaborator with Imperial Japan, extensively praised the "Japanese spirit," which embarrassed Kishi due to Park's rhetoric being unchanged from WW2-era Japan
