TIL that the world's oldest continuously operating library is in St. Catherine's monastery in Egypt. Built in the 550s AD by order of Emperor Justinian I, it contains one of the largest collections of early Christian icons, including the earliest known depiction of Jesus as "Christ Pantocrator"

TIL The Statue of Liberty is constructed with copper and originally had a red/brown color. The current green is a result of the oxidation over time. In 1907, the War Department stated that it did not intend to power wash it back to the original and it's been that way ever since.

TIL that the term "fundamentalism" was coined in 1920, and was named after a series of 12 Evangelical protestant pamphlets called " The Fundamentals: A Testimony to the Truth." The pamphlets argued that the Bible was the literal and inerrant word of God.

TIL that there are around 50-60 blue faience hippopotamus statuettes that survived from Ancient Egypt. Due to the danger hippos posed in the wild, they often snapped off the legs of hippopotamus statuettes before placing them in tombs, so the hippos wouldn’t be able to eat the soul of the deceased.

TIL there was disagreement over the danger of black widow spider bites until a 1933 experiment where professor Allan Blair allowed himself to be bitten. Blair also hoped to determine whether multiple bites would build immunity, but the first bite proved so painful that he decided against it.

TIL the Greek myth of Perseus & Andromeda takes place in Ethiopia. In the story, Andromeda is the daughter of the king of Aethiopia (modern day Ethiopia). Andromeda is chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster, but is saved from death by Perseus, who marries her and takes her to Greece.
