TIL that the FBI paid members of Best Buy's geek squad to report child porn found on computers brought in for repairs. This wasn't very successful though, since in one case a judge threw out all the evidence because the FBI obtained the search warrant using "false and misleading claims"

TIL: The Newport sex scandal. In 1919, future 4-time president Roosevelt oversaw a covert “sting” whereby young “straight” Navy men were ordered to solicit and have gay sex with men at the Newport YMCA. FDR’s conduct was later found to be “reprehensible” by a Senate Subcommittee.

TIL when Garry Shandling’s older brother Barry died at the age of 13, he inherited Barry’s Japanese pen pal Hiroki Shioji. The two corresponded for several years and in 1964, Hiroki came to Tucson to attend the University of Arizona. The Shandlings helped him through financial and paperwork issues.

TIL that Heath Ledger initially did not take any of his roles seriously until he watched some of his films and realized that he would not want to see any of them. TIL John Edward Allen, who was hired by Ozzy Osbourne as a "personal dwarf" in 1981-83 and renamed by Ozzy as "Ronnie" to mock Ronnie James Dio, also acted in movies such as Blade Runner. He was hung on stage every night as part of the show. He died of an overdose at the age of 49.

TIL Animated series Captain Pugwash was believed to have featured characters with risqué names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines and Roger the Cabin Boy. They were actually Master Mate, Tom the Cabin Boy, and Pirates Barnabas and Willy. Two British newspapers were successfully sued for the error.

TIL One of the rarest baseball cards is Pittsburgh's Honus Wagner. Cards used to come with tobacco, not gum, and Wagner was a non-smoker who didn't want kids to use tobacco, so he asked the company to stop production of his card. Thus, very few were made, so they're incredibly valuable today.

TIL that a man sued Warner Bros after he was injured while fainting during a screening of The Exorcist. He claimed that the film contained subliminal messages that caused his fainting spell. When he lost consciousness, his face hit one of the seats, breaking his jaw. They settled out of court.
