TIL in the 1950s, Congress believed Hawaii would vote Republican, so when making it a US state, they added Alaska, which was believed to be a Democratic stronghold, to balance it out. Today, Hawaii votes almost entirely Democratic, while Alaska is heavily Republican.

TIL Neil deGrasse Tyson once wrote a letter to James Cameron criticizing his 1997 film Titanic for using an incorrect star field for the time & location of the Titanic's sinking. Cameron subsequently updated the scene of Rose & Jack in the water with the correct stars for the film's 2012 re-release.

TIL: Clinking glasses together dates back to medieval times when hosts would pour their guests wine into their glass as proof it wasn't poisoned. Over time this became a symbolic gesture and if the guest trusted their host they would just clink their glasses together instead as a symbol of trust.

TIL about Ernie Shore, who took over in the first inning of a game Babe Ruth started. Ruth walked a batter, argued with the umpire, got ejected, and then punched the umpire. Shore picked off the runner, then retired the remaining 26 batters he faced in a row.
