TIL Freddie Mercury passed away in November 1991. On the following Christmas Day, Elton John received a package. When he opened it, he found a painting by Henry Scott Tuke, his favorite painter. There was also a note from Freddie wishing him a Happy Christmas. The gift made John cry like a child

TIL of Mariya Tsukanova, a Soviet medic during WW2. She saved dozens of lives, and took up a machine gun, firing until she lost consciousness from injuries. Being outnumbered, she was brutally tortured and executed by the Japanese and killed. She was named "Hero of the Soviet Union." posthumously.

TIL in 1987, 18 month-old Jessica McClure fell into a well in a backyard in Texas. CNN covered the rescue effort, which took 56 hours, and the story found worldwide attention. In 2011, McClure, aged 25, received a trust fund of donations from around the world. She has no memory of the event.

TIL that in 1845, Queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar ordered 50,000 of her subjects to go on a buffalo hunt. The hunt required building roads across jungles and lasted for 4 months, with around 10,000 people died from exhaustion, starvation, and malarial disease - but not a single buffalo was killed
