TIL about Charles Lightoller who survived his first shipwreck at age 15, and later survived the sinking of Titanic. During WWI he survived an encounter with a zeppelin, and sank a German U-boat by ramming it. As a civilian he also rescued over 100 men from the beaches of Dunkirk during WWII

TIL during a sailing competition in the 1988 South Korea Olympics, the Singapore team’s ship capsized and the two-man team was thrown overboard. They were rescued up by Lawrence Lemieux, who went off course to reach them. Lemieux finished 22nd, but was given 2nd place. He later received a medal.

TIL that a Comcast customer who was dissatisfied with the internet speed set up a raspberry Pi to counter the problem. The Pi ran internet speed tests and if his internet speed dropped below 50 megabits per second, the Pi tweeted hourly to @Comcast about the slower than advertised speeds.
