I did a deep dive on this one night. It goes hand in hand with the DC act of 1871. Most people don't know that the original 13th amendment to the Constitution was NOT about slavery- it was about Titles of Foreign Nobility. Meaning- if you held allegiance to ANYTHING other than America, you were banned from holding public office. This included lawyers- British Accredited Registry (BAR) lawyers are technically agents of The Crown.
Then the Civil War happened, everyone forgot the OG 13th was ratified, and in 1871, DC was founded (a sovereign city-state not beholden to the laws around it) and around 1875, EVERY. SINGLE. STATE somehow NEEDED to build a lavish old-world architecture INSANE ASYLUM. Simultaneously. As in, look up any state in the US. Around 1871-1890, EVERY STATE opened one up. They could house up to 15k people each, even in states with a supposed population of only a few thousand.
I think these were repurposed buildings and they were meant to house people who knew lawyers were forbidden from holding public office. I did a LOT of digging into this. Look up the date of the first state mental asylum in your state. It'll blow your mind.
