A CME will almost certainly emerge from the blast site (confirmation awaits fresh data from SOHO). But will it hit Earth? Like other CMEs AR3078 has produced this week, this one will skate the southern edge of the Earth strike zone. If it does hit us, the blow will be grazing, not full strength. However, even a grazing blow can cause a geomagnetic storm, especially in combination with other impacts, so stay tuned.

ANOTHER CME: Yesterday, Aug. 17th, active sunspot AR3078 produced a rapid-fire pair of M-class solar flares (M1+M2). The double blast hurled this CME into space. Although the bulk of the CME is directed south of the sun-Earth line, there appears to be an Earth-directed component. A faint halo suggests that a fraction of the cloud is heading our way. If so, it should arrive on Aug. 20th.

Something happened to Betelgeuse(2019): an SME, or "surface mass ejection." The mass of the SME was 400 billion times greater than a CME.

Most amazing of all is the change in Betelgeuse's regular 430-day pulsation. Astronomers have long known that Betelgeuse is a variable star; its metronome-like change in brightness has been observed for more than 200 years. Now it's gone; the regular pulsations have stopped. This attests to the ferocity of the blowout.

Hertzsprung Gap/Modern astrophysicists are interested in observations made many centuries ago. They studied records made in ancient Rome and China and medieval Europe and the Middle East. They were interested in the records of several large stars, such as Betelgeuse and Antares.
Now these luminaries are at the stage of a red supergiant. This is the last phase of their existence before they erupt as supernovae. It can last for thousands of years, although, for example, fluctuations in the brightness of Betelgeuse may indicate that it is approaching a peak.
