BREAKING: The Arizona Supreme Court building near downtown Phoenix has been evacuated as authorities investigate a package that tested positive for explosives.

Court officials say the situation began when staff found a suspicious package with no return label in the building’s mailroom, near 15th Avenue and Washington Street. Law enforcement was notified, and officials say the package tested positive for “homemade explosives.”

Criminal defense attorney Barry Pollack, the architect of the agreement that allowed Julian Assange's release after 15 years of litigation, appears today in the case of Nicolás Maduro in New York.

What the document is: “appearance of counsel” filed today before the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. In it, Barry J. Pollack formally notifies the court that he is assuming the defense of Nicolás Maduro Moros in the federal criminal case. It is the procedural step that certifies who represents the accused before the court.

Well-known among criminal defense attorneys in Washington, Barry Pollack is one of the most renowned criminal defense lawyers in Washington for complex federal crimes. He was Julian Assange's lead defender for more than a decade and negotiated the 2024 agreement with the Department of Justice that allowed his release after pleading guilty to a single minor espionage charge.

He has 35 years of experience in criminal defense, particularly in national security cases, espionage, and financial crimes. He has litigated landmark cases such as Enron, defended accused individuals under the Espionage Act, and worked on the overturning of wrongful convictions. Maduro's attorney said that the Venezuelan president would need to undergo a physical evaluation as a result of his own injuries sustained in his 'abduction.'

JUST IN - Maduro pleads not guilty to all charges, says he is a "decent man" and still the President of Venezuela.

Maduro added he is a "prisoner of war." He told the court that he had not previously seen the indictment and was unaware of his legal rights.

Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores, also pleaded not guilty to charges of illegal cocaine trafficking in the U.S., Reuters reports.

Both Maduro and Flores are requesting consular assistance from the Venezuelan embassy.

Judge orders Maduro to appear in court on March 17 for hearing.
