1939 census of religious denominations in the Third Reich

94.5% of the country was Christian, while 3.5% was "Gottgläubig"

Some people who identified as "Gottgläubig" were simply non-denotational Christians, such as Erich Koch, who was one of the most openly Christian members of the NSDAP yet officially identified as "Gottgläubig".

Somebody must come to Germany and say "We want freedom" But we refuse this continued form of oppression.

We are not bearing this hardship we do not cooperate with dictates, they are trying to force a diktat upon us.

SS Members Forbidden from Joining the German Faith Movement

"That church officials and ministers were disallowed to engage themselves in the SS is general knowledge about the Third Reich and its religious policy. But it passed entirely unnoticed that the interdiction applied to Pagan groups as well. Repeating an older statement from 15 October 1934 that required the "honorable retirement” of clerics from the SS, Himmler forbade SS members to adopt a leading function in any Christian or Pagan religious organization on 20 September 1935, explicitly citing the German Faith Movement as example."

Note: The German Faith Movement was the largest Pagan movement in the Third Reich, although only around 0.5% of the German population ever joined. The movement only held one rally and was shut down by Reinhard Heydrich and the SD in 1937
