Build a Clear Opinion

An unpopular opinion is only useful in a discussion if people can understand exactly what you believe.

Compare:

🔹 People spend too much time online.

with:

🔹 I think people spend too much time online because constant digital stimulation makes it harder to tolerate boredom.

The second statement gives the listener something concrete to respond to.

That's the skill we're practicing today:

🧠 Precision before persuasion.

1️⃣ Start with the opinion

Use:

✔️ I think...

✔️ I don't think...

✔️ In my opinion...

But don't stop there.

For example:

🔹 I think traveling is overrated.

Now ask:

What exactly do I mean by that?

Maybe:

🔹I don't think traveling automatically makes people more open-minded.

Now the position is much clearer.

2️⃣ Make your opinion specific

Take these vague opinions:

> Social media is bad.

> University is overrated.

> People work too much.

Rewrite each one so that another person can clearly understand your position.

For example:

🔹 University is overrated.

becomes:

🔹 I think university is overrated for careers where practical experience matters more than a degree.

Notice what changed.

The opinion didn't become more controversial.

It became more precise.

3️⃣ Your challenge

Choose ONE:

🔹 Working from home is overrated.

🔹 Traveling is overrated.

🔹 Social media has made communication worse.

🔹 Being busy doesn't mean being productive.

Now complete:

My opinion:

> I think __.

What I actually m
ean is:

> _.

A more specific v
ersion:

> __.

💡 One rule for today

Don't try to sound intelligent.

Don't try to sound controversial.

Don't use complicated vocabulary.

Make your meaning impossible to misunderstand.

That is the first skill you'll need for Friday's discussion.

An Opinion Needs a Reason

Yesterday you worked on making your opinions specific.

Today we're adding the next layer:

🧠 reasoning.

If someone asks:

🔹 Why do you think that?

saying:

🔹 Because I just think so.

doesn't take the conversation anywhere.

You need to build a small argument.

#education

🧩 The 3-Step Structure

CLAIM → REASON → CONSEQUENCE

1️⃣ CLAIM

What do you believe?

🔹 I think people are too obsessed with productivity.

2️⃣ REASON

Why?

🔹 Because many people measure their value by how much they accomplish every day.

3️⃣ CONSEQUENCE

What happens as a result?

🔹 This can make people focus on being constantly busy instead of focusing on meaningful work.

Now the listener can understand the logic behind your position.

💡 Try it yourself

Choose one:

🔹 Social media has made communication worse.

🔹 Traveling is overrated.

🔹 University is not for everyone.

🔹 Being busy doesn't mean being productive.

Build your argument:

CLAIM

> I think...

REASON

> The main reason is...

CONSEQUENCE

> This can lead to...

#education

🔥 Challenge

Now do it again without using because.

Instead of:

> I think university is overrated because...

try:

🔹 I think university is overrated. One reason is that...

or:

🔹 I think university is overrated. The problem is that...

or:

🔹 I think university is overrated. This is mainly because...

The goal isn't to memorize alternatives.

The goal is to become capable of developing an idea instead of stopping after one sentence.

⚪️ One Final Rule

Don't collect reasons just to make your answer longer.

A strong discussion contribution is not:

❌ Opinion + five random reasons

It's:

✅ Opinion + one clear reason + logical consequence.

That's enough to give someone something worth responding to.

What Do You Do When Someone Disagrees?

Having an opinion is easy.

Explaining it is harder.

But the real communication skill appears when someone says:

🔹 I don't agree.

A weak response ends the interaction:

🔹 I disagree.

A stronger response keeps your position while giving the other person something to engage with.

🧩 The Structure

ACKNOWLEDGE → CONTRAST → SUPPORT

1️⃣ Acknowledge

Show that you understood their point.

🔹 I see your point.

🔹 That's a fair point.

🔹 I understand what you mean.

2️⃣ Contrast

Make it clear that you still have a different position.

🔹 But I look at it differently.

🔹 However, I don't think that necessarily means...

🔹 At the same time, I think...

3️⃣ Support

Give the reason behind your position.

🔹 The reason I say that is...

🔹 My concern is that...

🔹 What makes me think that is...

Put them together:

🔹 That's a fair point, but I look at it differently. The reason I say that is that being more connected online doesn't necessarily mean we're communicating better.

🔥 Pushback Lab

Imagine you've said:

> I think people are too obsessed with productivity.

Someone responds:

> But if you want to achieve something, you have to work hard.

Don't simply say:

🔹 I disagree.

Build a response using:

ACKNOWLEDGE

> ---

CONTRAST

> ---

SUPPORT

> ---

#education

🧠 Now make it harder.

Someone says:

> I actually think being busy is a good thing.

Respond without:

❌ attacking the person

❌ saying “You're wrong”

❌ abandoning your position

❌ changing the subject

Try:

🔹 I understand your point, but…

or:

🔹 That's a fair point. However…

or:

🔹 I agree to some extent, but…

Then explain why you still disagree.

#education

💡 The important distinction

Good disagreement is not about winning.

It's about keeping your position while continuing to understand and respond to another person's thinking.

That's exactly what makes an unpopular opinion interesting in a discussion.

#education

⚪️ Before Friday

Prepare one opinion you genuinely believe.

Then prepare:

Your position

🔹 I think...

Your strongest reason

🔹 The main reason is...

Your response to disagreement

🔹 I see your point, but...

You now have the three pieces you need:

> POSITION → REASONING → PUSHBACK

Friday is where you put them together.
