Today, Ethiopia welcomes 2019 E.C. — a new year filled with hope, joy, and new beginnings. ✨

One of the unique things about the Ethiopian calendar is that it has 13 months: 12 months of 30 days each, plus a special 13th month called Pagume (ጳጉሜን).

Pagume has 5 days in a normal year and 6 days every four years. It is often described as a short month that brings the Ethiopian year to its close before the new year begins. 🌿

Then comes Enkutatash, the Ethiopian New Year, celebrated on September 11 (or September 12 in a leap year). It also marks the beginning of the beautiful season when the countryside is filled with yellow Meskel flowers. 🌼

Families and friends come together, children sing traditional songs, people visit loved ones, and homes are filled with food, coffee, laughter, and blessings. ☕❤️

For Ethiopians, Enkutatash is more than just a change of the calendar. It represents a fresh beginning — a time to leave the past behind, welcome new possibilities, and share happiness with others.
