Request How much trouble would Earth be in at the end of Independence Day

At the very beginning of the movie, It was stated by the very first people who discovered the alien craft that it was 1/4 the mass of the moon. It was nuked into oblivion by our heroic hacker/fighter pilot dream team, but all that mass has to go somewhere, right? I didn't recall then saying it was in orbit, so now it no longer has any stabilizing/propulsive way to keep it above earth.

So it's either

A) In orbit, in lots of pieces

Or

B) All coming down

Now, either way, particularly B, that's bad for random things landing and crushing what's left of civilization and ocean impacts making waves.

But what about that extra mass merely *existing*? That mass adds to the gravitational influence of earth, so the moon's orbit is surely impacted, and not in a nice circularized way. It would make it far more elliptical, which means drastically varied tides, right?

So, how bad would it be?

It's great that they prevented immediate annihilation, yes, but how far did they kick the can down the road?
