So trump was clearly alarmed enough by casualty figures and projections to consider quarantining New York and then didn’t. This wasn’t 4D chess this was him warski planning and then changing his course of action based on the responses he received. We can infer several things from this:

1. Ending the shutdowns by Easter was never realistic and will not happen because

2. Things are worse than they have been projecting. A common result of group think and decision by committee is wishful thinking. This has been characteristic of the government and Trumps response so far. Refer to his earlier comments about it just going away in April.

3. Aggressive measures to enforce quarantines are rolling out across the western world and are clearly under consideration by our government as well.

4. It is unlikely they have the capability to effectively enforce any such heavy handed response and also probably realize at this point it’s too late to help much anyway.

5. Markets will have another bad week as this shows the situation is not under control and only getting worse.

6. New evidence that the data out of China is fake indicates that no country is ‘over the hump’ yet and may indicate that the bell curve model is flawed deeply. I’m guessing this played a larger role in the quarantine proposal than people realize.

7. Trump has no clue what to do to slow this down but wants to go for the appearance of martial strength. The repeated references to war during the speech in Norfolk today as well as the aggressive marketing of the governments response is meant as a clear show of strength. Keen observers of politics will recognize that when an actor is working to present themselves as strong is usually the best indicator they think they are very weak.

8. Everyone in government is freaking out about the virus and the response and the attendant social discord but has no fucking clue what to do expect shambolic efforts. If this quarantine proposal was sincere and indicative of the response by the best informed leaders we have it shows they have no good responses and see a very dark road in the coming weeks.
