As a lifelong midwesterner, during the winter i keep a Navy Seabag in my car with extra gloves, socks, a trauma first aid kit, a marmot sleeping bag rated to -30*F, a liner that adds another 20* of protection, some freeze dried meals, & tools for melting snow to make water, & cooking tools. Everything i need to survive it i get stranded & injured in a storm. The reality is, out here in the plains states with huge distances between population centers, you have to understand help in winter storm conditions may be DAYS away.
