Senators Corman and Dush File Petition to Compel Compliance with Election Investigation Subpoena

The Pennsylvania Senate Intergovernmental Operations Committee has been attempting to audit the state’s voter rolls since September of last year. Meanwhile, Democrat AG Josh Shapiro has done everything in his power to obstruct that investigation. In January, a Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania upheld the Senate’s authority to issue subpoenas for detailed voter roll information. Despite that ruling, the Pennsylvania Department of State has still not complied with the Senate’s subpoena.

Yesterday, Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman announced on Twitter that the committee has filed a petition “to compel the Department of State to comply with a subpoena for information necessary to conduct a thorough investigation of recent elections.”

Senator Corman and Senate Intergovernmental Operations Committee Chair Cris Dush commented on the move in a statement yesterday:

“Throughout the past several months since our investigation began, the Wolf Administration, Senate Democrats, and Attorney General Shapiro have unfairly denied a co-equal branch of government the tools necessary to repair the vulnerabilities of our election system. Today’s legal action is intended to finally bring their needless delays and continued obstruction to an end.

“It is an embarrassment to our Commonwealth that the Department of State still refuses to comply with a legal, legitimate subpoena from a co-equal branch of government. The fact that the Department wouldn’t even turn over basic information included in the subpoena without pages upon pages of unexplained redactions shows they have no respect for the legislature or the courts. They should not be allowed to thumb their nose at the other two branches of government with impunity.

“Millions of Pennsylvanians have lost confidence in our elections. They deserve an election system they can believe in, and that can only happen with full transparency. We will not stop fighting to improve our voting system and repair the public’s faith in our elections – no matter how much our opponents try to obstruct, obfuscate and deceive the public about the intent of the investigation.”
