It is incredible that our system failed so catastrophically. I think the RNC knew at least most of the story, as evidenced by Kevin McCarthy's comment on 6/15/16, and Paul Ryan's instruction to keep Trump's allegiance to Russia a secret.

He knew that wasn’t true but it was convenient to use against Trump, who was McCarthy’s political enemy.
