The implosion of a chemical tank at a pulp and paper mill in Washington state killed an undisclosed number of people, authorities and company officials confirmed.

LONGVIEW, Wash. — A major chemical tank rupture has left an unknown number of people dead and even more unaccounted for at the Nippon Dynawave facility in Longview, Wash., fire officials confirmed Tuesday.

The supply tank ruptured around 7:18 a.m. Pacific Time, burning multiple people and exposing others to harmful chemicals.
It was being used to store "white liquor," which is a a highly caustic alkaline solution used to break down solid wood chips in the pulp and paper production process. Local fire officials said the 80,000-gallon tank was roughly 60% full. According to fire officials, the "white liquor" is a mixture of sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide and disodium carbonate that is used in the paper-making process.

Ten people, including one firefighter and nine facility workers, were taken to hospitals in Longview and Vancouver for treatment. An unknown number of people were killed, and there are individuals who are still unaccounted for, officials said.

They added that there is no threat to the surrounding community, and there are no evacuation orders at this time. Fire officials said the scene is stable and that crews had assessed the hazardous materials component as well as the structural concerns.

However, residents are asked to stay away from Industrial Way and avoid the surrounding area while emergency crews respond to the incident.

Fire department officials said crews and a Hazardous Materials Team are working with Nippon Dynawave employees to "mitigate the product and container involved." Officials have not reported what type of chemical caused the implosion.

The Nippon Dynawave facility houses a kraft pulp and paper mill and multiple liquid packaging plants, and employs approximately 1,000 people.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
