Miller lost his life when the carrier he later served aboard was torpedoed by a japanese submarine. The torpedo caused a catastrophic explosion in the weapons magazine aboard the USS Liscombe Bay, and she sank quickly, taking 644 men with her, including Seaman Miller. Its fitting the US Navy has chosen CVN-81 to bear his name.
