1. Gagarin did take written notes
The pencil did not float away. Gagarin reported: "My handwriting did not change, although the hand did not weigh anything, but I had to hold the notebook. Otherwise it would have floated away from me". He advised future cosmonauts to secure loose items.

2. The secret unlock code
Manual controls were locked due to medical concerns about weightlessness. A code was sealed in an onboard envelope for emergency use. Prior to launch, the code (1-2-5) was told to Gagarin anyway.

3. Ejection and landing
Vostok 1 could not perform a soft landing. Gagarin ejected at 7 km altitude and parachuted separately. The USSR concealed this to meet FAI requirements that the pilot land inside the spacecraft. He landed in a field near Smelovka village in Saratov region.

4. Separation failure and re-entry
The service module failed to separate cleanly due to a stuck umbilical cable. This caused the capsule to tumble. Gagarin reported: "The craft began to rotate rapidly.
