Mavka (Мавка)

Mavka is a female forest spirit in Slavic folklore —the soul of a child who died unbaptized or a girl who perished in the woods. She appears as a beautiful young girl with long flowing hair, but from behind, her back is hollow or her internal organs are visible through translucent skin.

She dwells in deep forests, meadows, and mountain passes, often near streams or clearings. She is most active in spring and early summer, especially during the green week.

Her character is ambivalent—playful but dangerous. Mavka lures young men into the forest by singing and dancing, then tickles them to death or leads them into ravines. However, unlike the vengeful Rusalka, Mavka feels genuine sorrow for her victims and may weep over their bodies. If someone answers her call with a prayer, she can find peace and pass into the afterlife.

Protection requires carrying wormwood, iron, or weaщring a cross. Never follow a singing voice into the woods alone. If a Mavka approaches, bless her with a prayer—this may free her soul and save your own.
