It’s wild reflecting on the journey we’ve been on with this beautiful festival.

At our first event, we barely sold 80 tickets. Afterwards, we seriously questioned whether we should even do another one. We almost didn’t.

As a child, I experienced multiple types of abuse.

I was repeatedly punched, hit, snatched up, headbutted, called a “fucking pussy” over and over, told I wasn’t worthy to be my dad’s son because of how I played in a basketball game at 12 years old. I held a baseball bat and stood in front of our front door so my dad couldn’t get in the house when I was 13 after my mom caught him cheating. I was my mom’s caretaker at 13–14 while my dad was in rehab—holding her every night while she wailed, setting aside my own emotions to make sure she was okay. I got beat to a pulp by my dad in a motel room in front of my teammates when I was 14 for playing poorly in a game. I witnessed my mom strung out on psych meds, screaming that her skin was burning, go through multiple suicide attempts, etc. There’s a lot more.

I’ve been to the depths of darkness, and have come out the other side.

I’ve faced my pain, and the pain I caused others when I was still living in mine.

The point is:

you can be severely victimized, go through hell, transmute it, and no longer live as a victim—refrain from repeating the generational patterns that were projected onto you, and still become a great husband, father, and man.

I am a walking testimony of this.
