The Department of Foreign Affairs has spent almost โฌ117,000 on VIP services at Dublin airport in the last 18 months - all while people struggle to make ends meet and the country wrestles with accommodation issues.
Bureaucrats lapped up personalised check-ins and security, fancy suites for relaxation, drinks and dining, and a chauffeur-driven car to and from the airport, Independent IE revealed.
Two separate bills of โฌ8,778 were ran up while welcoming US President Biden to the country earlier in 2023, and a similar-sized bill was found for a delegation to meet Spanish President Pedro Sanchezโs in August.
The department has defended the spending, saying that โthe use of airport VIP facilities mitigates risksโ and โensures discretion,โ adding it had been able to get a โpreferential rateโ for the services.
Theyโre laughing in the faces of the public.

The birthplace of Adolf Hitler has been a long-running debate in Braunau am Inn, with the man himself even wishing for the building to be used for โadministrative purposes.โ
Now authorities have decided it will become a police station - a move which has upset local residents who say that Hitler is getting his final wish.
Defending the decision, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior said that โa former apartment of Adolf Hitler on Munich's Prinzregentenplatz has housed various offices of the Bavarian police since 1949."
We think a global tech giant's HQ would have been more fitting...

A joint operation between Spanish and Italian anti-mafia investigators, along with Europol, seized 700 kilos of cocaine and four men with connections to the 'Ndrangheta and a Balkans cartel were arrested.
Among the men are two Italian nationals, a Croatian, and a Serbian who operated from a Polish-flagged sailboat to smuggle drugs from Latin America, investigators said, adding that the suspects had โa high standard of livingโ despite not being employed, and were concerned only with maintaining the vessel.

๐ฅ ๐ณ๐ด Court Rules Against Meta - Fines To Continue In Data Spat
The Silicon Valley firm must continue to pay $93,200 per day until it solves the issues Oslo has with data harvesting and targeted advertising, a court ruled on Wednesday, with the decision potentially now going to the European data regulator.
If that happens, the case could have wider implications across the bloc and make the fine permanent. Norway has not decided whether to refer or not as of Wednesday.
Meta had argued that fines were disproportionate and Norwayโs expectations were impossible to meet, adding it was โdisappointedโ with the ruling.

IMPORTANT: UNโs Cybercrime Over-Reach Treaty Hits A Wall
A far-reaching proposal to make online expression as serious as computer-related offences such as system hacking has divided the international community.
The treaty, in development for four years, would see international cooperation on electronic evidence gathering for ANY serious offence - not just cybercrime - possible, so a criminal could be convicted in his home country using evidence collected by another.
Also, governments could cooperate on committing so-called crimes such as hate speech online, and there are no safeguards in place to prevent other governments conducting surveillance without judicial authorisation or even probable cause.
Treaty negotiations, currently at a stalemate, are due to conclude early in 2024.
