Germany received the most applications, approximately 30% of the 519,000 lodged, according to EU Asylum Agency data.
Spain and France received 17% and 16% of the submissions, respectively, and Norway and Switzerland saw an increase of almost 30% during the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
The number of applications “could exceed one million by the end of the year,” the agency said, adding that most applications came from Syrians, Afghans, Venezuelans, Turks and Colombians, accounting for 44% of requests in total.
