🇪🇸Deputy PM Meets Fugitive Kingmaker To Shore Up Support

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz went to Brussels for talks with exiled Catalan politician Carles Puigdemont to try and garner his support and help keep PM Pedro Sanchez’s coalition in power.

The hung parliament election result in July left Puigdemont, in exile in Belgium since Catalonia’s failed independence push in 2017, as a kingmaker since his Junts party, a collection of separatists, will be crucial for winning the right to form a government.

🇮🇹 World’s Oldest Bank To Be Sold? Gov Split Over Privatisation Push

Italy’s governing coalition is bickering over plans to sell state-owned assets, including Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, to bolster finances as the country’s souring economic outlook sours and investors call for clear sale strategies.

Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has called for the bank to be privatised, but members of Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini’s League party rebutted the idea and said the sale shouldn’t be rushed.

The huge public spat comes as Meloni’s government try to free up cash for spending without adding to Italy’s mammoth debt, but a sale could anger EU regulators and set off alarm bells in financial markets.

🇮🇹Ovid Inspiring Red Water Lake Drying Up In Italy

Lake Pergusa, where according to legend Proserpina picked flowers before being kidnapped by Pluto, and which inspired Cicero, Ovid, Diodorus Siculu and John Milton, is at risk of disappearing forever as it dries up.

The famed lake, notable for the water turning red due to anaerobic photosynthetic sulphur bacteria, has been completely neglected by authorities, and doesn’t even have someone overseeing it.

A nearby sewage network is sucking away water which would normally flow into the lake, and compounding the issue is the fact it has no tributaries.

EU ‘Student’ Visa Racket Gang Busted In Malta 🇲🇹

A gang selling documents which gave access to Schengen Europe charged €18,000 to Vietnamese travellers who posed as students - and on Monday one ‘student’ was jailed for six months.

“They acquire a visa as students. But they never intend to be students... Malta is the easiest place to get a visa. They get it and flee," prosecuting Inspector Karl Roberts told the court.

Nguyen Thi Hanh, a 26-year-old Vietnamese national, left her newborn child with her mother to “study English” in Malta, but after 3 months, still can’t speak a word, the inspector said.

Authorities have been withholding passports to ensure the travellers return home. On this occasion, the woman was heading to board a flight to Budapest using someone else’s passport, police said.
