FBI HOOVERING UP DNA: 21 Million Samples and Counting

China and the U.S. are collecting the same proportion of their populations’ DNA profiles — and the FBI wants to double its budget to get even more.

The FBI has amassed 21.7 million DNA profiles — equivalent to about 7% of the U.S. population — according to Bureau data reviewed by The Intercept.

The FBI has collected 90,000 samples a month — “over 10 times the historical sample volume” — and expected to total about 1.5 million new DNA samples a year.
