France’s two remaining coal-fired power stations will be kept burning over the winter over worries that energy could be in short supply and 'sustainable' energy won't fill the gap.

As a "precaution" for the coming winter, "we are taking all measures to ensure French electricity production," the government said.

The move means pleans to close the entire French fleet of four coal-fired plants before 2022 - a promise President Emmanuel Macron made in 2017 - will again be delayed.

The rotted corpse of a homeless man was discovered in a 50cm hollow by a friend who went to visit him in the dense brush on the edge of the Wienerberg recreation area, with the victim’s head a few metres away with a coin-sized hole made inside.

Despite the body having been ravaged by wildlife, authorities are sure the man’s death was not an accident, as the skull injury “indicates a massive use of force,” the police said.
