The Best Secure Email Providers in 2025

Defining “Secure”

Before I offer my suggestions, I should take a moment to explain how I define “secure” email since marketing can mean basically anything. “Secure email,” to me, means an email provider who enforces zero-knowledge encryption; that is to say a provider who cannot access your emails as they're sitting in your inbox. It’s not enough to simply pinky promise to respect your privacy. If they can access your data, so can an attacker who gains access whether a cybercriminal, a crooked employee, or a government with a court order. Likewise, services should apply that encryption automatically wherever possible. The onus should not be upon the users for you to go generate your own PGP keys (or whatever security protocol the provider is built upon) and apply it yourself. I also expect the clients (aka apps) of the service to be source available so that qualified, interested parties can verify that everything is implemented correctly and doing what it claims to. Security is important and easy to mess up. Readers can see my full list of criteria here.

Many of us know we can do better on the internet. We know that we’re not using good security practices, and many of us know we’re being tracked online. Getting started can be overwhelming and intimidating for some, but I think the new year is a great excuse to take those first steps. In this blog post, I want to share one of the absolute easiest but most powerful things you can do to start regaining your privacy and security online: block ads...

The Invisible Way You Can Be Tracked Online

...Fingerprinting is when a company combines several pieces of information about your device or browser to uniquely identify you out of all of the other devices and browsers out there. As long as your fingerprint stays the same – which, by default, it usually does – they can easily track you across multiple unrelated websites or apps. This is why targeted advertising can sometimes be creepy accurate: they are literally stalking you using characteristics that are nearly impossible to change...

Kelly Wright on Grand Juries and How the State Attempts to Control Information

Today we are joined by Kelly Wright. Kelly has written for the Center on topics ranging from the history of anarchist thought, transgender liberation, and police militarization. Kelly also served as Chelsea Manning’s Campaign Manager for her run for U.S. Senate in the Democratic Primary in Maryland in 2018 and is a member of Chelsea’s support committee providing material support for Chelsea as she defies a federal grand jury. Our topic today is on the legal tools the US Government has to target whistleblowers and dissenters and restrict the civil liberties of every day Americans. Today we cover the legal ground surrounding grand juries, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and other examples of legal overreach by the state. Kelly is able to draw from a wide variety of examples from the history of state overreach.
