RNA editing tool can take some of the risk out of gene therapy
Researchers named their new tools R-IscB and R-Cas9 and defined their usage in genome research and medicine.
"They are the Swiss army knives for RNA editing," Ke said. "We show that they can be used to perturb mRNA functions, to slice and destroy the targeted mRNA, or to correct the coding mistakes in the mRNA target.

The ability to correct disease-causing genetic mistakes using genome editors holds great promise in medicine, but it is not without risk. When this type of "genetic surgery" is performed on DNA, for instance, ...

The quest to create gene-edited babies gets a reboot
There's a fresh push to edit the genes of human embryos to prevent diseases and enhance characteristics that parents value. Bioethicists say just because it's possible doesn't mean it should be done.

How Trump’s DC takeover could supercharge surveillance
Now, with federal agencies and entities working with military personnel under declared-emergency circumstances, new gear could enter domestic use. And local officials or the civilian review boards that normally oversee police use of such technologies may lack the power to prevent or even monitor it. In 2021, the D.C. government ended a facial-recognition pilot program after police used it to identify a protester at Lafayette Square. But local prohibitions don’t apply to federalized or military forces.

How Trump’s DC takeover could supercharge surveillance
The emergency declaration, combined with new tech, will give government broad new abilities to watch and monitor citizens.
Trump’s national defense strategy is focused on the homeland. So far, that has included troops in the streets.
As National Guardsmen are sent for a second time in recent months to a U.S. city whose local leaders made no requests for their support, we may be seeing the Trump administration’s new national defense strategy play out in unprecedented ways ill-matched to military capabilities.

While calling out the National Guard makes a political statement, they’re not the best means of fighting crime, CSIS’s Mark Cancian says.

The Best Secure Email Providers in 2025
Defining “Secure”
Before I offer my suggestions, I should take a moment to explain how I define “secure” email since marketing can mean basically anything. “Secure email,” to me, means an email provider who enforces zero-knowledge encryption; that is to say a provider who cannot access your emails as they're sitting in your inbox. It’s not enough to simply pinky promise to respect your privacy. If they can access your data, so can an attacker who gains access whether a cybercriminal, a crooked employee, or a government with a court order. Likewise, services should apply that encryption automatically wherever possible. The onus should not be upon the users for you to go generate your own PGP keys (or whatever security protocol the provider is built upon) and apply it yourself. I also expect the clients (aka apps) of the service to be source available so that qualified, interested parties can verify that everything is implemented correctly and doing what it claims to. Security is important and easy to mess up. Readers can see my full list of criteria here.
