There is still debate within Indonesian government bureaus over the ban, as producers want to access high-priced foreign markets. The energy ministry said in its statement it was trying to secure supplies for domestic power plants with dwindling stockpiles. China is the world’s biggest user and importer of coal, and Indonesia is its biggest supplier. After China halted coal imports from Australia amid a geopolitical spat, Indonesia became an even more important source, accounting for more than 60% of imports in 2021 through the end of November, according to China Customs data. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-03/indonesia-coal-export-ban-may-have-low-impact-on-top-buyer-china

Although the situation came to a head abruptly, it’s been years in the making. Europe is in the midst of an energy transition, shutting down coal-fired electricity plants and increasing its reliance on renewables. Wind and solar are cleaner but sometimes fickle, as illustrated by the sudden drop in turbine-generated power the continent recorded last year. France needs to take several of its reactors offline for maintenance and repairs, resulting in a 30% reduction in nuclear capacity in early January, while Germany is moving ahead with plans to shut down all of its nuclear plants. With the two coldest months of winter still ahead, the fear is that Europe may run out of gas. https://www.bloomberg.com/businessweek?sref=yRptvEiV

World food prices jumped 28% in 2021 to their highest level in a decade and hopes for a return to more stable market conditions this year are slim, the U.N.'s food agency said. A surge in the price of fertilisers, linked in turn to spiralling energy prices, has ramped up the cost of so-called inputs used by farmers to produce crops, raising doubts over yield prospects for this year's harvests. https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/world-food-prices-hit-10-year-peak-2021-2022-01-06/
India’s central bank has created a dedicated department for fintech challenges, which includes a pair at their doorstep: framing cryptocurrency regulations and a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The RBI is working on two types of CBDCs, wholesale and retail, and the new department will now be tasked with overseeing their development. Meanwhile, India’s parliament is set to consider regulations of cryptocurrencies. The RBI has unsuccessfully tried to “prohibit” banks from dealing with crypto exchanges in the past. https://www.coindesk.com/business/2022/01/08/indias-central-bank-creates-fintech-department-as-challenges-posed-by-crypto-cbdc-grow/
Israel’s National Security Council has assumed control of a massive bird flu outbreak in the Galilee, which scientists warn could become a “mass disaster” for humans. Over half a billion migrating birds pass through the area every year, heading for warm African winters or balmy European summers, making this a catastrophic location for a major bird flu outbreak—right at the nexus of global avian travel. https://news.yahoo.com/massive-bird-flu-outbreak-could-153426477.html
Europe's largest economy was not exempt from the effects of the energy price spike, with household energy prices increasing by over 22 percent in one year by November 2021. The inflation rate shot up to 5.2 percent in November - a figure not seen since the early 1990s. René Schumann, managing director of the Düsseldorf Negotiation Advisory Group, cautioned: "The big wave of price increases for consumers is yet to come." He added: "The companies will, where possible, recapitalise their profit margins instead of passing on lower costs to the consumers." https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1545895/german-economy-crisis-inflation-record-energy-prices-latest-eu-news

The final results of the clearing have not yet been tallied, but no big global changes in the data are expected. The result turned out to be lower than planned (the department's experts expected that the country would receive at least 7,15 million tons of potatoes), the main reason for the shortage is unfavorable weather conditions. https://agroinsurance.com/en/News/Russia---2021-saw-potato
