The Virtues of the Month of Allāh, Muharram _ Shaykh Sāleh al-Fawzān حفظه الله

بســـم اللــه الرحــمــن الـرحـــيــم

▪️The Virtue Of Muharram▪️

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said,

concerning the words of Allah “so wrong not yourselves therein”

[Soorat at-Tawbah 9:36]:

(The command not to wrong yourself) applies in all months, then Allah singled out four months and made them sacred, and emphasised their sanctity, and He made sin during these months more grave, and He made righteous deeds and the reward thereof greater.

Qataadah said, concerning the words “so wrong not yourselves therein”: Wrongdoing during the sacred months is more serious and incurs a greater burden of sin than in other months.

Wrongdoing is a serious matter in any circumstances, but Allah makes whatever He wills of His commands carry more weight.

And he said: Allah has chosen elites from His creation: from among the angels He chose Messengers, from among mankind He chose Messengers, from among speech He chose remembrance of Him (dhikr), from among spaces on earth He chose the mosques, from among the months He chose Ramadan and the sacred months, from among days He chose Friday (Jumu‘ah), and from among nights He chose Laylat al-Qadr. So venerate that which has been chosen by Allah, for people of understanding and wisdom respect that which has been chosen by Allah.

⏩ Ruling on Attending a Funeral Service for a non Muslim Where They Would do Religious Rituals

Question :

Can you attend a funeral service for a non muslim where they would do religious rituals? (Even if you are not participating, you would have to watch it)

Answer :

The scholars mention that it is not allowed for a Muslim to attend a funeral service of a non-Muslim. That includes religious rituals because it involves witnessing evil and possibly Shirk/Kufr. In Islam, we are not allowed to witness evil without prohibiting it as Allah says: “And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity” [25:72]

Likewise, the scholars mention it is not allowed to follow the funeral of a disbeliever [See: Majmoo’ al-Fatwa (24/256)]. And they made an exception for a Muslim participating in the burial of their non-Muslim parents as a last form of dutifulnes towards them. For more on this, see Shaikh al-Albani’s speech in Silsilatus-Saheeha (no. 161).

▪️Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: 

Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah expiates for all minor sins, in other words this brings forgiveness for all sins except for major sins. 

Then he said: 

Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah is an expiation for two years, and the day of ‘Ashoora is an expiation for one year, and if a person’s Ameen coincides with the Ameen of the angels, his previous sins will be forgiven… Each of the things mentioned may bring expiation. If he does something that expiates for minor sins he will be expiated, and if there are no minor or major sins, it will be recorded for him as good deeds and he will rise in status thereby… If there is one or more major sins and no minor sins, we hope that it will reduce his major sins.

▪️Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

It may be that your criticism of your Muslim brother for a sin he has committed is an even greater sin than his, because it means that you feel pride in your obedience and you are praising yourself for that, and claiming to be free from sin, whereas your brother has fallen into sin. But it may be that his feeling humble because of his sin and what has happened to him, such as his feeling humble and submissive, thinking less of himself, ridding himself of pious pretensions, arrogance and self-admiration, standing before Allah with his head bowed, his gaze lowered and his heart broken – it may be that all of that is better for him than your feeling proud of your obedience, thinking that you are doing much good, believing that by doing so you are important, and reminding Allah and mankind of that.*

How Many Shayātīn Enter Your Home and Eat With You? by Shaykh 'Abdurrazzāq al-Badr حفظه الله

There is not an hour from the hours of the worldly-life except that it will be presented (and shown) to the slave on the Day of Judgement; day after day, and hour after hour. And not an hour passes of which Allah - The Most High - was not remembered, except that his soul will tear up in anguish due to regret and sorrow.

So how about someone who goes hour by hour, day by day, and nights after nights without remembering his Lord?

Narrated Ḥārithah b. Wahb Al-Khuzaʿī: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying. “May I tell you of the people of Paradise? Every weak and poor obscure person whom the people look down upon but his oath is fulfilled by Allah when he takes an oath to do something.
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْبَاغَنْدِيُّ، نا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ وَهْبٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسلَّمَ، يَقُولُ: " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ؟ كُلُّ ضَعِيفٍ مُتَضَعِّفٍ، لَوْ أَقْسَمَ عَلَى اللهِ لَأَبَرَّهُ،

And may I inform you of the people of the Hell-Fire? They are all those violent, arrogant and stubborn people.”
أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَهْلِ النَّارِ؟ كُلُّ عُتُلٍّ جَوَّاظٍ مُسْتَكْبِرٍ "
