📚 Introduction: The Names of Allah
➡️ The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
«إن لله تِسْعَةً، وتِسْعِينَ، اسْمًا، مِائَةً إلا واحدا مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دخل الجنة»
“Indeed Allah has 99 Names; whoever preserves them will enter Paradise.” [Muslim]
Preserving them includes:
1️⃣ Memorising them
2️⃣ Understanding their meanings
3️⃣ Praising Allah and calling upon Him through them
4️⃣ Acting upon what they necessitate. For instance, Allah’s Name ‘al-Raqīb’ means The Ever Watchful. You can act upon this name by abstaining from His prohibitions, knowing He is Ever Watchful over you.
📍 The names of Allah are not limited to 99 names, however the hadeeth above mentions the merit of memorising and learning 99 of them.
➡️ The belief in the Names and Attributes of Allah is one of the pillars of faith in Allah, the Exalted.
These pillars are:
1️⃣ belief in the existence of Allah
2️⃣ belief in His Lordship (Ruboobiyyah)
3️⃣ belief in His sole Right to all forms of worship (Uloohiyyah)
4️⃣ belief in His Names and Attributes (Asmaa was-Sifaat)
➡️ It is also one of the three categories of tawheed (believing in the oneness of Allah):
1️⃣ Tawheed Al-Ruboobiyyah
2️⃣ Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah
3️⃣ Tawheed Al-Asmaa was-Sifaat
➡️ That is why the status of learning Al-Asmaa‘ was-Sifaat is of the utmost importance.
➡️ It is not possible for anyone to worship Allah in a complete way, until he has acquired knowledge of the Names and Attributes of Allah, the Exalted, in order to worship Him upon clarity.
⚪ Allah, the Exalted, said:
(وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا)
“And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them” [Sūrat Al-A’raaf: 180]
➡️ Calling upon Allah using His Names and Attributes is to be done when requesting something specific, and also when one calls upon Allah just to praise Him.
➡️ In Sha' Allah, together we will learn what Name of Allah one can mention when calling upon Allah to request something. We also learn that when one calls upon Allah to praise Him, he is worshipping Allah with the these Names!

📚 Some principles concerning Allah’s Names and Attributes
1️⃣ All of Allah's names are beautiful in that they reach the utmost limits of beauty.
2️⃣ His names are both titles and descriptions:
➡️ They are titles as they refer to Him: they are like synonyms, since they all refer to the same One - Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
➡️ They are descriptions as they each carry different meanings, with each one referring to a specific meaning.
3️⃣ The Names and Attributes of Allah are Tawqeefiyyah - which means knowledge of them is restricted to textual evidence and there is no place for intellectual free-thinking regarding them.
➡️ Based on this, we must suffice ourselves with what is found in the Book and the Sunnah, without adding or taking anything away.
4️⃣ They aren't limited to any specific number, and this is understood from the hadeeth where the Prophet (ﷺ) makes dua to Allah with these words:
أسألك بكل اسم هو لك سميت به نفسك، أو أنزلته في كتابك، أو علمته أحداً من خلقك أو استأثرت به في علم الغيب عندك
“...I ask You by every Name that You have, those You named Yourself with, those You revealed in Your Book, those You taught one of Your created beings, and those You kept with Yourself as knowledge of the Unseen ...”
5️⃣ All of Allah’s attributes are attributes of perfection - there is no imperfection in them whatsoever.
6️⃣ Knowledge of Allah's attributes is more expansive than knowledge of His names, since each one of His names includes an attribute. This is also the case since some of the attributes are connected to Allah’s actions, and there is no end to the actions of Allah, just as there is no end to His statements.
➡️ Follow us as we learn together some of the most beautiful names of Allah SWT and draw nearer to Him!

Allah's Name: الرءوف
Ar-Ra’ūf (The All-Kind)
➡️ Kindness is the highest level of mercy and Allah's name Al-Ra'uf shows that Allah is the One with complete Kindness, the Ever-Compassionate.
➡️ This beautiful name is mentioned 10 times in the Qur’an. For example, Allah says that which means:
"And Allah warns you of Himself, and Allah is All-Kind to His slaves" [Āl-‘Imrān: 30]
➡️ In eight other mentions of this name in the Quran, it occurs with the name Al-Raheem (the Most Merciful) as in Allah's saying that which means:
"Indeed your Lord is Kind and and Merciful" [Al-Nahl: 7]
➡️ This beautiful name instills love of Allah Almighty in the Muslim's heart and a hope for what He has. No one is ever more kind or merciful than He.
➡️ Kindness originally comes from Allah Almighty. He is compassionate towards His servants. He revealed the scriptures and sent the messengers to them, made it easy for them to worship Him and He accepts repentance from them.
➡️ Allah's compassion may be granted as a result of invocation. He responds to His servants when they invoke Him sincerely and earnestly, as Allah says that which means:
"And those who came after them, saying, Our Lord, forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in faith, and do not put in our hearts any rancor towards those who believe, Our Lord, You are All-Kind, Most Merciful" [Sūrat Al-Hashr: 10]
💎 It is said regarding the difference between kindness and mercy, as Al-Qurtubi mentioned: Kindness is a blissful favor in all aspects; whereas mercy may be painful at the moment, with a blissful outcome later. Hence, Allah Almighty says about the punishment of the adulterers: "And do not be taken by kindness for them in the religion of Allah.' [Al-Nūr:2]
He does not use the word ‘mercy’ here, for beating sinners on account of their disobedience is actually a form of mercy towards them, but not kindness.

Allah's Name: الغني
Al-Ghani (The Self-Sufficient)
➡️ Al-Ghani is the One Who needs nothing at all from His creation, for He has the perfect attributes, and all the creation stands in need of Him for all their affairs.
➡️ This noble name is mentioned 18 times in the Qur’an. For example, Allah says that which means:
"O people, it is you who stand in need of Allah; as for Allah, He is the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy" [Fātir: 15]
➡️ Also, Allah says that which means: "And whoever turns away, then Allah is indeed the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy." [Al-Hadīd: 24]
💎 Dear sister, you should know with certainty that you can dispense with everyone except for Allah Almighty. No created being can ever dispense with the Almighty Lord, not even for the blink of an eye or less than that. We are in desperate need of Him all the time.
💎 Remember that no matter what power, status, or authority you may possess, you will still be in need of your Lord and His mercy, help, and favors. Allah says that which means: "Allah wants to lighten your burdens, for man was created weak." [Al-Nisā’: 28]. It is only with Allah that you can attain anything of this life or the next.
💎 Be certain that the more you stand in need of your Lord, the richer you become.
💎 In the sight of Allah, richness lies in the contentment of a person’s soul. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Richness does not lie in worldly abundance, but in contentment of the soul.” [Bukhari and Muslim]
💎 Indeed, the greatest thing that can fill a person’s heart with contentment is to know Allah Almighty, and to love Him and believe in Him.

Allah's Names: الكريم الأكرم
Al-Karīm - Al-Akram
(The Generous - The Most Generous)
➡️ These noble names of Allah indicate the abundance of Allah’s favors and the greatness of His giving. Indeed, Allah is Generous and He loves generosity.
➡️ His name, the Most Generous refers to Allah being better in generosity than every generous one. He has no equal in this. Indeed, all good lies in His hands and comes from Him.
➡️ The name Al-Kareem occurs 3 times in the Qur’an. For example, Allah says that which means:
"O man, what has deceived you about your Generous Lord" [Al-Infitār: 6]
➡️ The name Al-Akram occurs only once in the Qur’an in the verse that reads:
﴿اقرَأ وَرَبُّكَ الأَكرَمُ﴾
"Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous." [Al-‘Alaq: 3]
➡️ In addition, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Verily, your Almighty Lord is Modest and Generous. He is so Modest that He would not turn down His servant who raises his hands to Him (in supplication) empty-handed.” [Ahmad]
💎 Dear sister, let us praise our Lord often and not be negligent, for He is the Most Generous, none deserves to be praised more than He does and He praises Himself.
💎 Our Lord is the Generous One Whose favors are innumerable despite the commission of many sins on the part of His servants, so hasten to repent and be ever mindful of your Generous Lord.
💎 Allah is generous and He loves the generous and bountiful people. Show generosity to others and you will be shown generosity by Allah, and give to others and Allah will give you. And be very wary of miserliness as it is not befitting of the Muslim who follows the example of the Prophet ﷺ.
💎 Do not ever limit the areas of generosity to money and food. Indeed, there are other areas of bounty that may be greater and more valuable. For example, a person may show generosity through his standing, his knowledge, his time, or his life.

Allah's Name: الواسع
Al-Waasi' (The All-Embracing)
➡️ This beautiful name denotes the vastness of Allah's mercy, knowledge, majesty and all His perfect attributes.
➡️ It occurs 9 times in the Qur’an. For example, Allah says that which means:
"But if the two separate, Allah will make each dispense with the other out of His plenty provision. Indeed, Allah is All-Embracing, All-Wise." [Al-Nisā’: 130]
💎 Dear sister, your knowledge of the vastness and greatness of Allah and His mercy, power, knowledge, grace, and giving instills a sense of reverence and fear in your heart from Him, as well as love for Him. Ponder over the words of Allah...
﴿ رَبَّنا وَسِعتَ كُلَّ شَيءٍ رَحمَةً وَعِلمًا ﴾
"Our Lord, You have embraced all things in mercy and knowledge" [Ghāfir: 7]
💎 You can couple Allah’s name ‘the All-Embracing’ with all His other names, for nothing in His creation is hidden from Him as He has all-embracing knowledge; nothing within His dominion can escape His power, for He has all-embracing ability, and the preservation of the heavens and earth does not tire Him; the sins of sinners do not trouble Him, for He has all-embracing mercy and forgiveness; and there is no limit to His giving and rewards, for He has all-embracing generosity.
➡️As Allah says, "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing."

Allah's Name: القدوس
Al-Qudoos (The Most Holy)
➡️ Al-Qudoos means the One Exalted far above any deficiency or defect whatsoever, for He alone possesses the attributes of absolute perfection.
➡️ This noble name occurs twice in the Qur’an. The first in the following verse:
﴿هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذي لا إِلهَ إِلّا هُوَ المَلِكُ القُدّوس﴾
"He is Allah, there is no god except Him; the King, the Holy One" [Al-Hashr: 23]
➡️ The second mention is in the verse:
﴿يُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ ما فِي السَّماواتِ وَما فِي الأَرضِ المَلِكِ القُدّوسِ العَزيزِ الحَكيمِ﴾
"All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth extols the glory of Allah, the King, the Holy One, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise." [Jumu‘ah: 1]
➡️ Knowing this beautiful name of Allah increases the Muslim's love for his Lord, as it teaches us the perfection of Allah from all aspects and the fact that He has no deficiency whatsoever in His self or actions.
➡️ Part of extolling Allah Almighty is to extol His Shariah and deem it exalted above any deficiency. This requires that we rule with His Shariah and this will ensure our safety in this world and in the Hereafter.
➡️ As narrated by Abu Dawood, it is sunnah to recite after finishing the Witr prayer:
سبحان الملك القدوس
"Subhaan Al-Malik Al-Qudoos"
“Glory be to the King, the Holy One”, three times.
➡️ A benefit regarding the association between Allah’s name ‘the King’ and His name ‘the Holy One’ is that Allah Almighty is not like the kings in the world who may commit injustice, mistakes, unwise acts or they go through heedlessness and forgetfulness. He is the Holy King Who is absolutely Perfect and Exalted far above all defects.

He is the Holy King Who is absolutely Perfect and Exalted far above all defects.
