EU plans €9,000,000,000 (billion) joint borrowing for Ukraine, more for reconstruction
The money would be borrowed by the Commission on the market against guarantees from EU governments under its macro-financial assistance programme to keep Ukraine going until the end of June as it struggles to fight off Russia's invasion.
"The EU will continue to provide short-term financial support to Ukraine to meet its needs and keep basic services running," Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said.
"We stand ready to take a leading role in the international reconstruction efforts to help rebuild a democratic and prosperous Ukraine. This means investments will go hand-in-hand with reforms that will support Ukraine in pursuing its European path," she said.
The EU has already provided 4.1 billion euros to Ukraine since Russia invaded on Feb 24, including military aid.

Britain pledges $100 million to help keep Ukrainian state running
The latest round of cash, which is in addition to $290.95 million (220 million pounds) pledged already, could be used to pay public-sector workers in Ukraine or fund pension and social security payments, British authorities said.
"While only Putin can fully end the suffering in Ukraine, today's new funding will continue to help those facing the deteriorating humanitarian situation," Johnson added.
The money will be disbursed through the World Bank Multi-Donor Trust Fund, which is designed to fast-track donations to Ukraine and is already used by some other nations.

Why Does the BBC Exist?
India announced that it would no longer export wheat. This was a vital news story because it means that food prices will rise worldwide. Millions more will die in Africa. The poor in Britain and the rest of Europe will suffer massively.
Indonesia has already stopped exporting palm oil.
Germany and Spain have introduced food rationing.
I couldn’t find these stories on the BBC Website. Maybe there were there somewhere. But I didn’t see them. And these should have been the lead stories. They weren’t lead stories whenever I looked at the BBC site.

President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde has attacked cryptocurrencies, claiming that they are “worth nothing” because they lack underlying assets “as an anchor to safety,” and called for them to be regulated in an appearance on Dutch television.
According to Bloomberg, Lagarde is concerned about those “who have no understanding of the risks, who will lose it all and who will be terribly disappointed, which is why I believe that that should be regulated”.
