Can the power of information be controlled?
The internet democratised speech but with the new Online Safety Bill, politicians and the media are trying to put the genie back in the bottle
nowledge is power”, or so the old adage goes. Perhaps what the proverb overlooks is that those who facilitate the spread of knowledge hold more power than anyone. In human rights terms, freedom of expression is the right to impart and to receive information; and while a greater emphasis is often placed on the abilities of speakers to express themselves, what makes censorship so potent is that it is, in effect, the ability of an actor to exercise power over others by preventing them from receiving information.

I put a handle on a kitchen cupboard today. (The old one had thrown itself on the floor in an act of hari kari.) This may not sound memorable to you but to me it was a major piece of do-it-yourself-ery. By the time I’d finished, the kitchen was awash with tools. Most amazingly, there was no blood.
After I’d finished, my good lady made me a lovely cup of coffee so I felt like a proper workman. She did complain, though, that I hadn’t winked at her or pinched her bottom. I told her that workmen daren’t do that these days.
