1. The academisation program introduced over the last 15 years disrupted the Local Authority system for overseeing and supporting schools, with the introduction promising greater autonomy, and even a greater share of finances. Many Christians and other faiths engaged in starting free schools in this developing new system and opportunity, but many schools also maintained their Christian ethos and values, remaining within the Local authority structures and Church of England diocesan structures for Voluntary Aided and Voluntary Controlled schools.

2. The Schools Bill will require all schools to become academies, and all academies to become part of large Multi Academy Trusts (MAT), which may or may not hold Christian values. State schools with a Christian heritage may be overseen by governors and trustees within such MATs who have no love for Jesus Christ. Free from the laws on Religious Education and collective worship, the schools in these trusts can leave behind for good the Christian foundations and teachings on which they were built. It has already been shown that 50% of Academy schools without a religious character do not meet their contractual or legal requirements for religious education.

3. New academies can only have state provided sites, closing the future possibility that any new church school can be set up. In fact, the DfE wants to prevent any new faith/church school from being set up. This bill also limits existing trusts/church/faith schools from expanding to accommodate the number of people that want to take advantage of a more morally correct education that retains children’s innocence for as long as possible. These schools would lose the right to receive or buy extra land for their school.

4. The Bill gives the DfE the right to close down independent schools and make it an offence for the school to continue to operate.

5. Independent schools will need to apply for DfE approval if they change their details, including: the proprietor, the address, the age range of pupils, the maximum number of pupils, whether the school is for boys or girls and whether it provides accommodation.
6. When schools in the UK began, they were all Christian; churches began the schools. The 1944 Act allowed the state to take control and to fund staffing and buildings, but there has continued to be a requirement for Christian worship and Christian teaching in all schools since that time. As other faiths have become more prevalent, Christianity, and the commitment of churches to children in school has waned, so has the quality and delivery of a Christian witness in our state schools. The Bill provides that worship and RE arrangements in academies can be changed or even removed by DfE regulations. The Schools Bill promotes changes to the laws and the local structures which embed Religious Education in the timetables of our schools. At the moment All schools are still required by law to have a daily act of collective worship which is Christian. Will teaching and worship of Christ cease in our schools? Will Jesus finally be expelled?

7. Many still do make much effort to speak of Jesus Christ in state schools, and the current laws help them to do so, as a fair amount of the extra curriculum subjects are chosen by the head teacher, teachers and the board of governors. The freedom for teachers and school leaders to keep Jesus Christ in their schools is under threat.

8. School governance can be decided by the DfE as the Bill gives the DfE power to remove governors and replace them itself.

9. The DfE will have the right to set school hours and term times removing any freedom of choice from school heads and governors.

10. The DfE will have the right to set admission procedures, regardless of the current admission policies of each school.

11. The DfE will have the right to set absence policies, completely removing the right of any parent to obtain permission from the head teacher for term time off for any reason.

12. The DfE will set fines for absences and has already indicated that these will be punitive.

13. The DfE will control how the proprietors of school spend their money, completely removing their autonomy.

14. This bill also undermines the roll of teacher in the education system by stringent new rules. In the past the school headmasters had some say as to what teachers in their employ were paid but this was especially true for Independent/ Trust and church schools. They were able to pay and grade teachers to their abilities But now, whatever your ability, if you are a teacher, the DfE will set your salary level. If you are a teacher the DfE can ban you from teaching not only in schools, but also online and remotely. They can criminalise the teacher that doesn’t comply.

15. If you use a tutor, or out of school classes, the service provider will be under a duty to provide your child’s details to the local authority.

16. The list of Draconian, totalitarian measures that home educating families will face is truly stupefying and is designed to eradicate our unalienable rights. The Bill introduces a register of children not in school. This does not just affect home educating families, but also erodes the rights of school children. It will be a criminal offence to not comply.

17. If your child takes a day off for an appointment, you will have to register with your local authority.

18. You will be under a duty to supply your local authority with any information that it demands of you, under threat of fines or imprisonment if you fail to do so, or even if you make a clerical error in doing so.

19. If you use a tutor, or out of school classes, the service provider will be under a duty to provide your child’s details to the local authority.

20. If a tutor or service provider fails to provide the information, or makes a clerical error, they can face closure, fines and loss of their business.

21. If a family member educates your child with an EHCP (or 5 children or more) for some of the time, they will have to register as a school and face OFSTED inspection and the duties that schools have to provide your information to the local authority.

22. Any ‘setting’ which provides education to one child with an EHCP or 5 or more without an EHCP will have to register as a school: no exceptions are made for childminders, tutors, after school clubs, forest schools, relatives and large families who home educate.

24. We know that children in the UK are amongst the unhappiest in Europe and that mental health in schools is a real issue for many. The Bill takes away your right to remove your child from a school without oversight of your local authority, regardless of how that authority has already failed your child.

25. If your child has an EHCP and you are served with a school attendance order, the bill prevents you from every having it revoked, even if you move from the area, or the education that you provide is suitable.
