ESSERE & AVERE

In Italian, there are 2 super important verbs:

ESSERE = to be

AVERE = to have

(You hear them in almost every sentence)

Essere (to be)

Io sono = I am

Tu sei = You are

Lui/Lei è = He/She is

Noi siamo = We are

Voi siete = You (plural) are

Loro sono = They are


Used for:

describing people/feelings — Sono felice. (I am happy)

identity — Lei è italiana. (She is Italian)

location — Siamo a Roma. (We are in Rome)

Avere (to have)

Io ho = I have

Tu hai = You have

Lui/Lei ha = He/She has

Noi abbiamo = We have

Voi avete = You (plural) have

Loro hanno = They have


Used for:

possession — Ho un gatto. (I have a cat)

age — Ho 20 anni. (I’m 20 years old)

physical states — Hai fame? (Are you hungry?)
