Gradually, Then Suddenly?
America’s #1 Economy Is a GDP Mirage

The picture may appear comforting. America seemingly strides across the world stage while the U.S. economy appears as number 1, buoyed by a strong dollar and towering nominal GDP but this number one position is an accounting illusion built on the most expensive services in the world and a financial privilege that is actively eroding. When you measure an economy by what it actually makes, builds, and powers, the foundations of long-term power, America has already been eclipsed.

This isn’t about the rise of a competitor. This is about the hollowing out of the American economic engine.

For decades, the U.S. has financed a consumption-based lifestyle through two unsustainable tricks: the dollar’s “exorbitant privilege” as the global reserve currency, and historically cheap debt. The first allowed America to import far more than it exports, living far beyond its productive means. The second fuelled a speculative economy of financial engineering and stock buybacks instead of tangible investment.

Both supports are now cracking.

The dollar’s privileged position isn’t being lost in a big bang, but in a quiet, relentless drip of bilateral trade deals, and currency swaps that bypass the SWIFT system. As this privilege recedes, so does America’s ability to consume the world’s output on credit. The standard of living that was financed by global demand for dollars will contract.

Now the bill for the era of free money is arriving. Trillions in corporate, commercial, and government debt issued at near-zero rates must now be refinanced at significantly higher costs. This isn’t a risk; it’s a mathematical certainty. Capital that should be flowing into new factories, infrastructure, and R&D will instead be vacuumed into servicing old debts. It is a massive, non-negotiable drag on future growth.

The Federal Reserve’s frantic operations, like the recent overnight repurchase agreement that spiked over 2,300%*, are just the technocratic fine-tuning of this decay. They are managing the symptoms of a system whose fundamental structure has shifted. (And perhaps hides a secret bailout of a too big to fail financial institution.)

The transition from undisputed global economic leader to multipolar leader, and then to secondary power will not be a smooth, managed affair. It will be a protracted and painful process of relative decline, likely characterized by:

- Stagnant or Declining Real Incomes: The purchasing power of American wages will fall. This is already the reality for lower and many middle class Americans.

- Persistent Inflationary Pressure: Efforts to stimulate the economy or manage the debt will lead to a stagflationary grind.

- Deep Political and Social Fracture: A political system built on the promise of perpetual growth will have no good answers, leading to volatility, scapegoating, and a broken social contract. For now, political conflict is framed around red/blue, but sooner rather than later this will become in/out, i.e. those still benefitting from a decrepit system versus all the rest.

The descent began as long ago as 1971, but by far the worst is still yet to come. It remains an open question whether the decline will accelerate towards collapse or will it just be deeply uncomfortable, long, grim process of slowly becoming a has been nation.

In the short run we can expect America to engage in violent geopolitical fireworks to turn back the clock to the halcyon days of the 50’s and 60’s in the hope that foreign “victories” (such as recently in Iran and currently in Venezuela) will somehow reverse the terminal rot in the American economic system. At the very least these adventures provide an opportunity for some chest pounding and a full spectrum distraction for a little while more.

I'm not satisfied with the progress of contacts with Putin on Ukraine, - Trump

- I thought the easiest conflict was the one between Ukraine and Russia, but I haven't been able to reconcile them yet;

- This is a war between Biden, Zelensky, and Putin. I got involved in this situation and it's a mess;

- I don't foresee any difficulties between Russia and the US in connection with the operation in Venezuela;

- We didn't discuss Venezuela and Maduro with Putin.

- I'm not afraid of Putin, he added.

...Because once leader-capture, maritime strangulation, and selective legality are normalized, the world does not slide gently into chaos, it hardens into and accepts it. Law becomes costume, sovereignty becomes conditional, and power stops pretending it needs permission. The lecture circuit ends not with applause or rebuttal, but with silence – the kind that follows when every capital understands the same thing at once, that the hunt has been legitimized. And in a world where abduction is policy and force writes precedent, the next knock will not be answered with arguments, but with fire.
