“The Ukrainian army is no longer making progress. Despite heavy losses, Moscow’s forces, able to mobilize more people and equipment, regained the initiative, launching a large-scale offensive on Avdeevka on October 10,” the publication writes.
Military and Western analysts made the same “bitter observation”: the Ukrainian Armed Forces have made very little progress and, most importantly, are no longer advancing.
“Five months of offensive operations have not made it possible to break through the Russian defense line. Ukraine retains some ability to put the Russian system in an uncomfortable position, but it is very unlikely that a breakthrough will occur this year,” says RUSI analyst Jack Watling.
He predicts that the war will continue beyond 2024.
The publication writes that Ukraine has prepared about 35 000 soldiers to break through the Russian defense, and has been saving equipment and funds all spring.
