This Zero Waste event this Saturday looks interesting. I met one of the organisers at the brilliant Freedom Network Festival in May (next one in Sept thefreedomnetwork.co.uk) and was impressed by her ideas and the community work she does.

What we've learnt: Window sill growing musings from first-time grower Hazel.
"I've been inspired by The Growing Project to start growing. I have no outdoor space so am growing on my window sill. I have 6 trays of come again lettuce, some herbs and nasturtiums. I plan to squeeze some trays of microgreens under the window too.
This is a great project as we will always have these skills once learnt and these indoor crops are very quick and don't take much effort. With a store of seeds, rice and other staples we can have nutritious food within days. I also feel an inner glow every time I look at my crops growing ππΏ" Hazel

What we've learnt: Balcony growing musings from first-time grower Sonia.
"As a novice I've found experimenting to be the most important way to learn. A city girl who has never lived anywhere with a garden I've had a steep learning curve. I started in May growing tomatoes and courgettes from seed and strawberries, chard, rhubarb and aubergine from small plants. I'm proud of what I've achieved and excited to learn more." Sonia

City foraging:
"Since May, most mornings I've been picking my breakfast from my local park (and the strawberries on my balcony). First cherries, then plums and now blackberries. The blackberries seem to be struggling because of the lack of rain. Our park keeper told me that even if it looks like they're dead they'll get a second chance once they get a bit of water.
I'll be doing a foraging course in August to find out more. What do you forage and where?" Sonia

A big thank you to the team at https://english909.com/ for featuring The Growing Project on the radio station.
Truly independent media is a necessity for the future we need to create so it's great that we already have media like English 909 leading the way.

Inspiring people & projects:
"I've just met a fantastic group of people. They have joined together out of a Stand In The Park to use a piece of land to grow food. An Inspiring and committed group they've achieved a huge amount in 8 weeks. Please check out their Instagram to follow their journey and you can also ask them questions
https://instagram.com/hoe_and_grow
The project was initially set up by an experienced gardener but a lot of team had no previous experience and are learning as they go along They want to bring back community through gardening. I've come away feeling incredibly inspired and touched by the love that is driving the project and the group."

Inspiring people & projects:
One of the ways the system keeps us controlled is by keeping us divided. Engaging with our immediate communities & strengthening cohesion is a small step in creating the type of world we want to live in. The people on this street have been organising street parties (with bands, DJs & food etc) for 10 years. They do it to bring the community together & raise money for charity.
They get the road closed off by filling in a simple form (search Street Party on your council website) & collecting signatures of those that agree & object. The permit is free & should be applied for 6 to 8 weeks in advance. On the whole there is no reason why the council could reject the application.
You could throw a growing party where the street helps each other plant food & then have a good old dance afterwards.

We're controlled by the system because we've allowed ourselves to become reliant on it for our survival. Our hunter gatherer ancestors would have had the skills to survive off the land in any situation.
With that in mind I did the one day beginners course from MD Survival & Adventure on Sunday (17th July). A fantastic introduction, it's run by Micky an amazing tutor with lot's of real life practical experience who is really generous with his time.
We learnt to light fire without matches or a lighter, build fast emergency shelters, sanitize dirty water safe to drink, acquire food from the wild and camouflage techniques.
I learnt a huge amount in a short space of time and will definitely do an advanced course.

What we've been up to:
One of The Growing Project team managed to get a grant from their Housing Association, Origin, to improve the communal garden by planting fruit trees & bushes and herbs. The team spent an afternoon digging and planting.
If you're in Origin property or you are part of a community group you can apply for funding to do projects (not just growing) in London and Hertfordshire. Deadline 1st August

City foraging:
I tend to avoid foraging on roadsides because of pollution (that rule would obviously go out the window in an emergency situation) but does it really matter in a city? The park I forage in is quite isolated but there are roads close by. Are there any foraging experts that can advise? Will pollution contaminate the fruit internally?
