This Sunday, in The Arts, we talk about translation.
India has 22 ‘scheduled’ languages, 123 major languages (as per the 2011 Census), and upwards of 780 languages as per the People's Linguistic Survey of India, and, if one included dialects, the number is in the thousands. We can transact and communicate with link languages like Hindi and English, but that doesn’t really help us grasp the world view and culture of our fellow citizens. That’s where expert translators come in, giving us not just word-by-word renderings that we could pull up on our phones, but also bringing us flavour, nuance, context.
