The Goa Project: news and updates
As the internet has grown and high-speed connectivity on multiple screens has become ubiquitous, it has changed most aspects of our lives, not least the way we consume entertainment. But what about the entertainers? When we have grown accustomed to receiving…

By far the largest section of underrepresented people in Indian politics (and in varying degrees, that’s true around the world too), is women. Men effectively frame all the laws that govern our lives, including those that affect women. The 106th Amendment of the Constitution of India, a.k.a. the Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 — which allocates 33% percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women — is the culmination of almost three decades of work. It is not all done, though: its provisions will only come into play after the postponed census and subsequent delimitation exercise.
This Sunday, we hear from two people who have worked for the inclusion of women in politics, each in their own way:

Friends,
Our next TGP Sessions was scheduled for this Sunday, the 19th.
But given that the day also features some sort of cricket game which could apparently command a significant amount of attention from folks in India, and that we like our presenters to have a decent crowd in the audience, we’re postponing our session to the next weekend, the 26th of November. Same time.
What we’ll be chatting about is the Fringe and Geekery track, and this time we will hear about communities who are on the fringes of discourse. More on this in our next email.
We hope to see you then, and that your team won.

Tomorrow at TGP Sessions, in our Fringe & Geekery track, the fringe we are turning the lens to is a part of the country that doesn’t make it to the national discourse often, unless there is strife there. We’re looking at the north-east, Meghalaya to be precise. Our presenters are talking about: their just-released book about a Mizo enclave in Shillong; and a series of photographs by an atheist documenting faith.

Confronting mortality — your own, or that of your loved ones — is uncomfortable, difficult, often painful. But whatever thoughts one might have of afterlives the fact is that, as medical science progresses, we live longer lives, and the ends of our lives can be prolonged in ways that at least some of us may not want: intubated, kept alive but unable to live life in ways that matter.
Enter Advance Medical Directives, often referred to as ‘living wills,’ which let you specify the kind of end-of-life medical treatment you want should you then not be able to communicate your wishes yourself, so that your relatives and friends know they will be acting according as you would want.
This Sunday, we sit at the intersection of law and healthcare, and hear from experts on the basic medical and the legal aspects of these documents and why they are a good idea.

Come join us this Sunday to get insights into the creation and curation of an arts festival.
Our presenters are members of collectives that put together such events. One is a festival has artists from around the world and the best from India as well, and serves a community that creates and loves an art form that is ancient, but still not considered mainstream by some: ceramics. The other is a multi-arts festival that is determinedly independent, small and local: of, for, and by its community (and that community is TGP’s spiritual home, Goa).
Neha Kudchadkar will tell us about the Indian Ceramics Triennale, and Sitara Chowfla will talk about the platform and the festival that is Goa Open Arts.

This Sunday at #TGPSessions, we chat about laboratories and markets. We’re in our science & technology track this time, and in a format we have used rarely, with our speakers in conversation with each other. Both our speakers inhabit the intersection between the life sciences and the startup ecosystem in India. One has successfully run such a biotech startup and is now innovating in the vaccine space, and the other is an investor who has worked as a scientist in this field. They will talk about what it takes to run a business in this nascent field, especially in India, the potential advantages or pitfalls, working with regulators and other innovators.

Friends,
This weekend we talk about urban design, which affects all of us, even those of us who don’t live in busy metropolitan areas. We will discuss how everyday public spaces are created, and human resilience, and what happens when urban interventions by the state can be counter to the interests and desires of city dwellers.

As we in India wilt in a scorching summer, it seemed like a good time to discuss water.
We’re certainly seeing many of our metropolises scraping the bottom of the barrel, and drought and its fallout have always been a looming threat in the heartland.
This weekend, we chat with two people who have spent their careers working on water issues. Biplab will look at current realities, particularly at rural India, and Anu will look ahead at what the current science tells us India’s water future may look like.
Biplab has been a development innovator for 32 years, and has pioneered Bhungroo, a technology repurposing floodwater to combat drought, which has aided over 250,000 ultra-poor farming families across India, southeast Asia, east Asia, and Africa, aligning with the UN SDGs 1, 2, 5, and 13. Through Naireeta Services, he empowers women farmers to become climate leaders, promoting crop income doubling and disaster risk-reduction. Rooted in Gandhi’s antyodaya principle, this model has gained global recognition. He has received 32 global awards, serves as a mentor at IIT Kanpur’s incubation centre, and is a director of Gujarat’s Ecology Commission.
Anu is a two-time Forbes 30 under 30 entrepreneur, a Y Combinator alumnus (Summer 2017), and a TED Institute speaker. She has spent her career trying to understand and solve water issues in India.
