Our next #TGPSessions is a workshop on idea generation with Sumit Roy.

Sumit has made a career of encouraging people to grow their businesses into brands. He runs “the world’s smallest learn-by-earning university” which has no classrooms, no lectures, no employees: Univbrands. ‘Students’ learn by earning, on their own businesses. Univbrands students range from home-based entrepreneurs to managers in multi-national corporations spread all over the world: the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. He operates from Kolkata. Sumit learned how to grow brands in the 14 years he spent with Ogilvy & Mather. Then he learned how to grow people who grow brands in the four years he spent at Lintas. He is a founder member of The Red Curtain International, a group that does good theatre for good causes.

Dear friends,

If the extreme weather events that have become more frequent in recent years have not convinced you, maybe the brutal summer we in India have just gone through, and the delayed monsoon (and already, flooded cities) will. We are living in a world where climate change is a grim and ongoing reality. Even the more fortunate among us are feeling its effects; those with less privilege are undoubtedly going to get it worse. In this Sessions, we will hear from and chat with two people who have made environmental concerns their lives’ work: Shannon Olsson will talk about sustaining our lives and the lives around us; and Ajay Raghavan will focus on how we can better prepare for the future.

Dear friends,

In the digital world we live in, it is common to hear the lament that people don’t read any more. Which is untrue for ‘people like us,’ because we seem to be consuming words all day, just not through books as much, and as one of our presenters tells us, it is certainly untrue for people who don’t have ready access to books and want them. Our other presenter makes a living doing something many of tend to romanticise — perhaps as much as running a cute little cafe? — running a small independent bookshop in an era where online behemoths vacuum up the buyers.

Join us this Sunday to hear from two people who in their different ways work hard to put books into the hands of readers, Purnima Rao and Leonard Fernandes.

At #TGPSessions this Sunday, the 27th, at 5:30 p.m. IST, we take a dive into the world of design with two veterans.
Ranganath K will tell us how a possibly hazy brief gets translated into design, and Vinay Rao will talk about how design can ensure that a product can survive in the real world.

As the internet has grown and high-speed connectivity on multiple screens has become ubiquitous, it has changed most aspects of our lives, not least the way we consume entertainment. But what about the entertainers? When we have grown accustomed to receiving our content free or dirt cheap, and when there are so many producers vying for our attention, how does it affect their methods and their ways of being compensated for their labour? This Sunday, we hear from two veterans who know the ins and outs of both the creative and the economic sides of show business, one from cinema, the other from music. Do join in the conversation.

By far the largest section of underrepresented people in Indian politics (and in varying degrees, that’s true around the world too), is women. Men effectively frame all the laws that govern our lives, including those that affect women. The 106th Amendment of the Constitution of India, a.k.a. the Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 — which allocates 33% percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women — is the culmination of almost three decades of work. It is not all done, though: its provisions will only come into play after the postponed census and subsequent delimitation exercise.

This Sunday, we hear from two people who have worked for the inclusion of women in politics, each in their own way:

Friends,

Our next TGP Sessions was scheduled for this Sunday, the 19th.
But given that the day also features some sort of cricket game which could apparently command a significant amount of attention from folks in India, and that we like our presenters to have a decent crowd in the audience, we’re postponing our session to the next weekend, the 26th of November. Same time.
What we’ll be chatting about is the Fringe and Geekery track, and this time we will hear about communities who are on the fringes of discourse. More on this in our next email.
We hope to see you then, and that your team won.

~ Team TGP Sessions
Tomorrow at TGP Sessions, in our Fringe & Geekery track, the fringe we are turning the lens to is a part of the country that doesn’t make it to the national discourse often, unless there is strife there. We’re looking at the north-east, Meghalaya to be precise. Our presenters are talking about: their just-released book about a Mizo enclave in Shillong; and a series of photographs by an atheist documenting faith.

Friends, we started a WhatsApp channel which will be used to broadcast information about our events. You can subscribe here: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029Va5MrolIHphIh6yl4O2P
The WA channel will be a mirror of this Telegram channel, so if you’re a regular Telegram user, you don’t need to subscribe to that as well.
Sunday, 21st January, 5:30 p.m. IST.
Confronting mortality — your own, or that of your loved ones — is uncomfortable, difficult, often painful. But whatever thoughts one might have of afterlives the fact is that, as medical science progresses, we live longer lives, and the ends of our lives can be prolonged in ways that at least some of us may not want: intubated, kept alive but unable to live life in ways that matter.
Enter Advance Medical Directives, often referred to as ‘living wills,’ which let you specify the kind of end-of-life medical treatment you want should you then not be able to communicate your wishes yourself, so that your relatives and friends know they will be acting according as you would want.
This Sunday, we sit at the intersection of law and healthcare, and hear from experts on the basic medical and the legal aspects of these documents and why they are a good idea.
