Wynterfylleþ 2022 is Here

Béoþ ġesunde fellow Folcsidisċmenn & Heathens. Today, the Hærfest Emnyht, or Autumn Equinox of 2022 is the beginning of Wynterfylleþ, the start of Wynter and Folcsida New Year’s Day. May you all have a blessed New Year. Reflect on the last year and rejoice in your accomplishments, while looking ahead at the opportunities and possibilities that lie ahead. May fate have looked kindly upon you and the gods show favor. Wynternyht is soon approaching. May our minds begin preparing for this time of holy celebration.

*posted below is the Wynterfylleþ ġerímbóc and tomorrow, we’ll resume going through the year before delving into our sacred observances. Before one can live our faith, he or she must know our faith.

The Germanic Caste System & the Rígsþula

Part 12

Now you will be asking “what does a modern Noble look like today?” Sadly our ruling classes today are dominated by corrupt liars. Few examples embody even a shred of Nobility, to the point that it would be insulting to our forefathers to mention them in the same breath as the likes of King Redbad of Frisia, Haakon Jarl of Norway, Chief Widukind of the Saxons or King Rædwald of East Anglia. These great Heathen Lords & Kings should be the prime example for the leaders of the Heathen revival.

They have convincingly identified the exact source populations for the Anglo-Saxon migrations (CNEs = northern Germans and Danish)

"Among the continental medieval groups analysed, sites from both northern Germany and Denmark are indeed indistinguishable from England Early EMA CNE individuals...Consistently, England EMA CNE and medieval individuals from Lower Saxony exhibit almost identical genetic affinities and ancestry components, possess the highest level of genetic similarity and are symmetrically related to most ancient and modern populations. Together, this suggests that they are likely derived from the same source population."

Despite the Sutton Hoo and Snape burials and goods therein being distinctly Swedish-like (especially the helmet), the source populations of the Anglo-Saxons were only about 5% from Sweden/Norway, with the other 95% being Danish/German. However the Sweden/Norway component goes up to 30% in the Viking age
As I said recently, there is also French DNA in the English. The Nordic-Germanic ancestry of the Anglo-Saxons is distributed in the same pattern as the Iron Age French ancestry. In other words, the more Anglo-Saxon you are, the more French you are likely to be as well. Simply due to the fact that both populations entered the island from the East.

Edit. While the French ancestry first appeared at the same time as the Anglo-Saxons it was not accompanied by new male haplogroups like the Germanic migration was. Also French ancestry doesn't arrive all in the migration era like AS, rather it trickles in right up to the Middle Ages.

The paper estimates that modern English people range from 25-47% Anglo-Saxon, 11-57% Iron-age Briton, and 14-43% French. The ethnic English must be modelled with three source populations, not just two.

This other article may help to explain the EMA French DNA discovered in the new paper. It talks about a Germanic migration from Britain to France in the 6th century which resulted in exogamous breeding with French females.

https://www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/sites/archaeology/files/MGW_Franks_draft_2.doc

The Franks are also recorded as having some kind of colony in South Britain at this time. So it seems some of the Merovingians did get involved with the Anglo-Saxon migrations.
This article seems a bit anti-migrationist in nature, but their conclusions ends like this:

"The range of evidence over the three phases of the study period appears to demonstrate the sustained presence of a small number of Frankish people, whose societal roles in Britain can only be conjectured. They seem to appear as spouses, as free weapon-bearers, in some cases as probable lords (whether as warlords or as landowners) and perhaps even as entrepreneurs and traders."
Need to clarify that the 14-43% French DNA they identify in modern English people is not all from the Franks. The Franks were not that significant a presence. The paper specifies that French DNA continues to enter Britain right up to the Middle ages after the Normans. The Iron Age Britons already had French DNA from the LBA Celts too of course.

Ironically the only time there doesn't seem to have been a trickle of Southern DNA into Britain is during Roman rule!

On this day in history:

The Battle of Stamford Bridge

1066 CE, September 25th, the Battle of Stamford Bridge occurred. Fought between King Harold Godwinson’s Englisċ army & King Harald Hardrada’s Norwegian force, which was led by Godwinson’s brother Tostiġ Godwinson. After a bloody fight, Hardrada & Tostiġ, along with most of the Norwegians, were killed. Although Harold Godwinson won, the Normans defeated his army at Hastings less than three weeks later. This marked the death of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms & their subjugation, which is still a reality to this day. The Englisċ have never recovered nor freed themselves from the yolk of foreign rule. Hindsight is 20/20 & the Englisċ did what was seemed right at the time; they cannot be faulted for this. They bravely fought for freedom & independence; however, this is yet another example of a needless brother war that hurts all our folk. Both Kings should’ve allied, combined forces, & defeated William the Bastard’s Norman army.

The Folcsida Ġerímbóc:
The Observances (Part 38)

Wynternyht is a three nights long fyrm, or festival, where we look behind us at the close of harvest & we turn our attention toward the new year as winter soon approaches. Wynternyht, observed on the first full moon in the first month of Wynter, consists of Fréanblót (Fréa’s blо́t), Gydenneblót (Goddesses’ blо́t), & the Ylfablót (Elves’ blо́t).

On the first night, we honor Fréa Seaxnéat, Ingwine & Ylfdryhten

“On winter day there should be
blood-sacrifice for a good year…”
~ Wóden’s words from the Ynglinga Saga

“Thorkel jumps up and says, "Now we can see who is the strongest or is the best player. Let us break off the game." And so they did. Now the games ceased, and the summer comes on, and there was rather a coldness between Thorgrim and Gisli. Thorgrim meant to have a harvest feast on the first night of winter, and to sacrifice to [Fréa]”
~ Gisla Saga

“There were great Blót at that time & [Fréa] was given Blót there for a long time & magnificently crafted was [Fréa’s] likeness that the devil could speak to men through the idol.
~ Ǫgmundar þáttr dytts

At the [fyrm] of [Wynternyht] there was a feast prepared, and a [Gydenneblót], in which observance all were expected to take part…
~ Viga Glums Saga ch. 6

King Erík & Queen Gunnhildr came that same evening to Atley & Bárðr had prepared there a [fyrm] for the king & there would be a [Gydenneblót] & there his [fyrm] was the best & the drinking was great within the hall
~ Egils Saga ch. 44.

One autumn a great [Gydenneblót] was made for King Alui, & Alfillður went to the blót; she was more beautiful than any woman & all the people in [(the) Ylfhámas] were more peaceful than any other folk at that time

The Folcsida Ġerímbóc: Observances (Part 41)

On the 3rd night, we honor the Ylfe, the nature artists & Landwihtu. Our forebears held Ylfablót as private & was a time when hospitality was suspended.

There Móðsognir became most worthy of all Dvergar & Durinn second. Many manlike forms were made, Dvergar from the earth as Durinn told.
~ Völuspá 10

… he went to see Thordis, & asked what was best to help his healing. "She said, "An Elven hill is not far from here. Get the bull that Cormac killed & redden the outer side of the hill with its blood. Make a feast for the elves with its flesh & you’ll be healed” ~ Kormaks Saga ch. 22

In Austrfararvísur, Sigvat was looking for a place to stay, but was refused. First he was told their place was hallowed & he couldn’t enter. Next, he was told that he (due to his timing) was unlucky & if they allowed him in, it might incur Wóden’s wrath. He tried a few more places, but were all turned away.
