The Folcsida Ġerímbóc: Part 31

Ǽrra Líða, Early Calm

Sumor 3

“… the month is called … … in our language, Ǽrra Líða, for the sky is quiet and so too the winds. And it is usual to sail upon the sea”

~ Bede

The Germanic Caste System & the Rígsþula

Part 4

The Þéow (ON Þræll) was the first caste created. Ríg (OE Háma) laid between Eald-ealdfæder and Eald-ealdmóder (ON Ái & Edda), and nine months later they bore a son. These were the serfs and slaves of Germanic society. They would do the vast majority of hard labor, and were considered the property of a Freeman or Noble. They did have some rights; their owner would pass judgement over them but it must be within the law (as evidenced in the Alemannic Law codes). They would not be welcome at the Thing.

In the Lay of Rig, Thrall went onto have many children, and their names translate to “Brawler,” “Lustful,” “Tatter-coat” & “Bondwoman” to name but a few. None were flattering, but they were all necessary, as;

“…They fashioned fences,
they dunged the meadows, swine they herded,
goats they tended and turf they dug.”

Æfterra Líða, Latter Calm

Sumor 4

“…by ringing the bell, which in English they call mótbel, summon all and the opposites, which they say in English by the people, i.e. the calling and assembly of the people, and of all the nations, because all must meet there. . . It is a state that all the people, and the nations, must meet every year, once a year.”
~ King Ælfred’s Book of Law

The Germanic Caste System & the Rígsþula

Part 5

What does a Þéow look like today? They are those in our society that are enslaved by their desires & are naturally servile. Low to no self-control, easily addicted and generally unable to cope in a society without their hand being held at all times. In this modern society they are the drug addicts, hyper-materialists & petty criminals. Modern society has let down these people the most, as they have taken away all structure and hierarchy in the name of liberty and freedom to make their own (poor) choices. Treating these people as free people (equal) has brought them nothing but misery and suffering, and would benefit most from being given direction and a simple life. Þéows deserve quality of life and are not useless. Few would choose to be born a þéow, but without janitors, waste disposal and the road diggers everything would grind to a halt. There is honour in these roles done well, and suffering for those that pretend to be something they innately are not.

The Germanic Caste System & the Rígsþula

Part 6

“15.
Grandmother set forth plenteous dishes;
cooked was the calf, of dainties best.
Thence Rig uprose prepared to rest. --
Well he knew how to give them counsel --
he laid him down in the middle of the bed
and the home-folk twain upon either side.

16.
Thus he tarried three nights together,
then on he strode in the middle of the road
while thrice three moons were gliding by.

17.
A child had Grandmother, Churl they called him,
and sprinkled with water and swathed in linen,
rosy and ruddy, with sparkling eyes.
He grew and throve, and forthwith 'gan he
to break in oxen, to shape the harrow,
to build him houses and barns to raise him,
to fashion carts and follow the plough.”

Wéodmónaþ, Weed Month

Sumor 5

“Augustus mónaþ on úre geþeóde ƿé nemnaþ weódmónaþ, for þon þe hí on þam mónðe mǽst geweaxaþ”

Part 7

The Freeman (OE Ċeorl) was the second caste created. Ríg (Háma) laid between Ealdfæder and Ealdmóder (ON Afi & Amma), and nine months later they bore a son. These are the economic class; farmers, skilled labourers & shop owners. A Freeman is free to swear their allegiance to a lord of their choice, and are best described as competent, normal people. The most successful would own Þéows and could become wealthier than some Nobles. They were not owned by anyone, and would have greater rights (and also greater responsibilities) than the Þéows. They would make up the bulk of those that attended a Thing (OE Folcġemót, later the Witenaġemót).

As with Thrall, Churl had many children whose names translated to; “Hero, “Thane” “Smith” “Farmer,” “Lady” “Bride” “Maid” “Slender,” again to name but a few.

Part 8

As above, what does a modern Freeman look like today? Those that have the means to own their own property; skilled labourers, supervisors & mid-level management. Successful small business owners would fall under this category. The closest equivalent to todays Class system would be the modern Middle Class, not nobility, not staggeringly wealthy, but competent people earning a decent (or very good) living. From amongst this Caste can arise great men and women as can be seen in a few of the children of Churl (Hero & Lady).

The majority of people who have been drawn into Heathen circles probably fall into this category, and like the þéow there is no shame in this. They are the backbone of any stable society.

No full on Aryanism, but the romanticism and interest in ancient Germanic culture started in the 1800s with nationalism.

And also there was also pan-Germanism. Which even had support from outside of Germany.

Bjørnstjerne Martinius Bjørnson, who wrote the lyrics for the Norwegian national anthem, proclaimed in 1901:

“I'm a Pan-Germanist, I'm a Teuton and the greatest dream of my life is for the South Germanic peoples and the North Germanic peoples and their brothers in diaspora to unite in a fellow confederation.”

The poster in the picture is from the 19th century.

It says in German: “United Germanic state of Europe”.

Your ancestors were better people than we are today as a society. They were more in touch with nature and the Gods, they had complex languages, spiritual wisdom, proverbial philosophy, and tripartite societal structures that were dharmic in alignment.
They had stronger bodies, minds, and will. They had a tribal/national cultural identity which both unified them but was also based in deeper cultural expression and even occult spirituality.
They founded nations, hordes, empires, mysteries, temples/churches, schools of thought, fighting styles, arts, farming.
Never dismiss the greatness of your ancestors. No matter who you are.
And anyone who tell you to is trying to brainwash you, enforce the removal of old heritage and if not pushing genocide is trying to enslave you. No matter who you are.
I am proud of my ancestors and strive to honor them daily. Do you?

The human being exists and acts only as a member of the sib, not as an independent individual. The importance of the sib is reflected in manifold acts of vengeance in the old sagas and epics, where it is not the specific individual that is sought out for revenge, but any member of that sib. The individual gains identity by belonging to the sib, everything on the outside is considered hostile. Not only is membership in the sib the fundamental requirement for legitimate existence in Germanic society, but to be excluded is equivalent to death. The significance of the sib as a source of protection, peace, and rightful existence transcends the visible world, and by a unifying principle the sib includes the dead and the unborn.

Part 9

“25.
Thus he tarried three nights together;
then on he strode in the middle of the road
while thrice three moons were gliding by.

26.
Then a boy had Mother; she swathed him in silk,
and with water sprinkled him; called him Earl.
Light were his locks, and fair his cheeks,
flashing his eyes like a serpent's shone.”

Finally the Nobles (OE Eorl) was created. Rig (Háma) laid in between Fæder and Móder (ON Faðir & Móðir) and nine months later they bore a son. These are the leaders, priests & warriors in society; Kings, Chieftains & Nobles. The Nobilities primary duties were to protect the lands and Freemen under their control and to ensure the religious rites were performed.

This son alone Háma would return later in life and claim as his own son;

“28.
Forth from the thicket came Rig a-striding,
Rig a-striding, and taught him runes,
his own name gave him, -- as son he claimed him,
and bade him hold the ancestral fields, --
the ancestral fields -- and the ancient home.”

Háma would teach this son alone the Runes. This can be seen in two ways, first that he taught him how to write with the runic script, and secondly that Háma taught his son secret knowledge. With this Eorl went on to conquer 18 halls and rule over them well. It also demonstrates a link to esoteric knowledge (usually held by a priesthood) and this caste.

Eorl would have many children too, including “Heir” “Successor” “Kinsmen” and most importantly of all “Kon” the Kingly, who Rig would make the first King.
