Rites of Passage; Kóryos, Mannerbund, Agōgē and their Significance Today.
Part 7
The Ulfhednar (Wolf cult), Berserkers (Bear cult) & the Jöfurr (Boar cult) are another clear extension and evolution of the ancient Kóryos in Germanic traditions. These were all prominent within our Saga’s and Skaldic Poetry, warriors that took on the characteristics of these animals in battle. They were linked to Woden, the God of Death, battle and divine frenzy.
The rite of passage was an important aspect to our ancient forefathers, so much so that it survived the Christian conversions in the guise of many festivals (that seem to have influenced the Wild Hunt folklore), especially in rural areas. These rites of passage are a key reason as to why our people were able to spread from a small population just North of the Black Sea to cover all of Europe, North America, Australia and Central Asia.

Logadōm - Part 7
What were the other crimes that Loga committed? At Éagor's (Ægir’s) feast, his guests greatly praised the excellence of his servants, Fimafinger & Ǣled (Eldir). This upset Loga, so he killed Fimafinger. In another instance, he cut off Sibb’s (Sif's) hair, thus attempting to mark her as an outcast whore & violating her body & honor. Then there was when he assisted in Idunne’s (Iðunn’s) kidnapping & the time he worked to interfere with the creation of Þunor’s dwarven-forged hammer. His worst crime however, was his manipulations, which led to a war amongst the higher powers. Even in this briefest of list, he is not one to be emulated.

Part 8
What made these rites of passage so useful to our ancestors? It forced our youth to become the very best they can possibly be or they would not survive. Only the best survived, only the strongest could take what was needed to sustain themselves, and only the smartest would be able to pick their moment when their enemies were most vulnerable to maximise their rewards with minimal risk. Over many generations this breeds success and competence. The killing of their childhood dog would be an emotional trauma to build mental resilience among these adolescent men. You would be required to be able to kill as a full member of a tribe, you cannot flinch in a harsh world when faced with a foreign threat, and this ritual was the first great test of the boys.

Hail the Day - Happiness is a Choice
When you let anger, depression, bitterness, regret, and other negativities linger, they become a cloud that hovers over you & the shadows begin to whisper their darkness in your ear. The shadows are only downward thoughts & voices, speaking deep within yourself. This is where the madness lies. If you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you. Though, the sun shines her rays from above; illuminating and casting aside the shadows and builds a bridge over the abyss, but the shadows are never truly gone however, for shadows & light live together & are only covered by the bridge. When we turn our eyes upward & peer into the illuminated sky, we no longer see the shadows & therefore, stand a better chance of living in the light. It’s not about perfection, but effort. It’s not about always feeling good, but about knowing your direction. Loving your family, living your faith, & building your folk. The keys to healing.

The Folcsida Ġerímbóc: Observances (Part 42)
The first Fyðerling Tælmearc, or quarter date, occurs in the second winter month of 2022, on Blótmónaþ 17th, or November 7th. The quarter dates aren’t religious in nature, as our Pre-Christian Germanic forebears didn’t observe them; however, late in the Heathen period, likely an influence from the Rome & the church, we began to see the four-seasoned year emerge. The Fyðerling Tælmearca is included more so as a point of reference to help us mark the yearly cycles, rather than to be included into our Folcsida practice. To include them isn’t wrong, as we are a living religious tradition, which naturally evolves, but we must be honest that the “Wheel of the Year”, as viewed & practiced in a religious sense, is a modern New Age fabrication.
* the other Fyðerling Tælmearca fall on Sólmonaþ 15th (February 3rd), þrýmeolċemónaþ 16th (May 5th), & Wéodmónaþ 17th (August 7th).

Today is the Onsæġungdæġ, where we give our gods our Nýtenoffrung.
“This month [Blōtmōnaþ] is the month of sacrifice, because our forefathers, when they were heathens, always sacrificed in this month, that is, that they took and devoted to their idols the cattle which they wished to offer. In this month that the cattle which were to be slaughtered were dedicated to the gods”

On the Mónaþfyllen (Full Moon) of Blótmónaþ 18, 2022, or November 8th, we have Onsæġungdæġ, our Sacrifice Offering Day where we perform our Nýtenoffrung (Animal Offerings). With the weather cooling & Summer is behind us, Winter is nigh. Our forebears relied on animals for food & in the cold of winter, the crops would lessen, thus providing less food for our families & animals. Many of the animals wouldn’t survive the cold, with food lessening & fewer animals held greater chances of surviving the winter. On Onsæġungdæġ, we offer an animal to the gods & ask that they help us get through the hardships of winter. If one doesn’t have an animal to process, we can offer a piece of meat, or even an animal product such as milk or butter. With animal sacrifice, we must remember that the animal is consumed by the ones making the offering; it’s never left to rot. This is no different to a hunter eating his kill & praying over his meal.

Logadōm - Part 8
Why do pseudo-Heathens look to Loga? Is he alone? Are there not other chaotic powers? Throughout the lore, we have numerous accounts of the evil Eoten Goldwǽġe, also known as Hād & Angebod (the Norse Gullveig, Heið, & Angrboða). She is his counterpart & the “Father” of his the three children. Thrice burnt for her evil deeds, each time Loga ate her heart to birth the monsters: Eormenġeandor, Sċīnlǣċe, & Fenna (the Norse Jörmungandr, Leikn, & Fenrir). The same Eoten who spread Bealocræft (Seiðr) amongst mankind in opposition to Hāma’s gifts of order & culture. We must ask the question: with knowing that Loga is bound, sentenced, & punished as a nīðing for his unforgivable crimes, what makes one believe that he has the power or ability to spread chaos? How does one know that Goldwǽġe isn’t acting on his behalf?

Rites of Passage; Kóryos, Mannerbund, Agōgē and their Significance Today.
Part 9
It’s clear that modern man is lacking in many aspects. There is now a strong focus on their rights, and a strong aversion to any form of responsibility. I propose that a large part of this modern weakness is the lack of any meaningful rite of passage. To have no rite of passage is to never be held accountable and to never be held to a minimum standard. All in modernity are treated as equals despite all evidence being to the contrary. The ancient Greeks Olympic Games had only a single winner per event, and everyone else was a loser. Second place was as good as last place to the Greeks. Today we have participation trophies. Young men and women have no institution to properly prepare themselves for the harsh realities of life and are instead coddled.

Understanding the Loga-Goldwǽġe relationship is important, if one wants understand the elements of chaos in the higher realms. Recorded on the lore, these two have been at the forefront of sewing perpetual seeds of destruction, while the gods continually work to uphold the law of honor & order. While it’s true Wyrd’s decree has fated that Godadōmisċ (Old Norse Ragnarǫk), the final judgement of the gods, it is our duty to follow Wōden’s example & fight against the forces of chaos. Wyrd may be propelling us forward, but our orlæġ can still be threads weaving an honorable life with great deeds. When we stand by the gods & fight to preserve our way of life, if we suffer or die, then that was Wyrd’s decree & we couldn’t have prevented it; however, if we succeed, then more glory to us & the legacy we leave, for it wasn’t Wyrd’s decree that we fail. In either scenario, our charge doesn’t change. This is our way, the Wōdenic way.

These are the symptoms of a lack of rites of passage. What is the cure? To begin forcefully separating our teenage children from their families for a six month period and making them kill & eat their family dog? This is probably a bit excessive, and certainly would have animal & child protection services after us.
What are the alternatives? The ideal for our modern Heathen revival would be to develop our own appropriate rites of passages.

Logadóm - Part 10
In Quakerism Examined, John Wilkinson stated that “One of the artifices of Satan is, to induce men to believe that he does not exist”. This, along with the gods seemingly leaving us to our own devices, creates within many a false sense of reality; one that’s warped by the chaotic influences of Loga & Goldwǣġe. Although, Wilkinson was speaking of the Semitic Satan, an analogy can be made between Satan & Loga & Goldwǣġe, as all three are sewers of chaos, discord, strife, & perversion. Many, regardless of religion, or lack thereof, are under the spell of the Eotens, who care not who believes in them or not; they care only that their plan is carried out. In the blame game, we’re conditioned to look at the puppets & stay within the dualistic box created for us. Some, thinking they’re smart, see the strings. A few might see the hands that pull the strings, but fewer still can see the faces behind it all. Our folk are depending on us. The time is now to wake up

A naming ceremony when a baby is 9 days old was a tradition that is attested by our ancestors in the Sagas. This would be the moment a man would either accept a child and give them a name (usually the name of a great ancestor), or traditionally if the child was sickly or they doubted paternity would reject the child. To give a child a name would be to symbolically accept them into the fathers family and caste position. To not do so would condemn the child to Thralldom. This tradition was a rite of passage and has been incorporated into many Heathen kindreds practices, and should be encouraged.

Demons
The demons they surround me
They whisper in my ear
They tell me lies and confuse me
With things I need not hear
They tear me into pieces
Their words dark and bleak
When I try to take a stand
They refuse to let me speak
They thrive upon my weakness
They feed upon my pain
When I’m in their presence
All I know is shame
It seems they’ll never leave
Yet I struggle everyday
So I hold out hope as little it be
I’ll conquer them someway

Here is something guaranteed to make you smile.
Some 20 years ago, there was a book and a film that came out called ‘The Last Horseman’ that looked into the life of John Dodd, the last man to operate a horse-powered farm in Northumberland. He still ploughed his fields the traditional way, while every other farm in the country had mechanised.
In 1900 there was over 1,000,000 traditional working horses in Britain. In 2000, only a few remained.
Sadly in 2020, John passed away aged 91. But the farm remains strong. His grandsons continue to work the farm in the traditional way.
Not only this, but around Britain, others have started working farms in this traditional horse-powered way. This ancient way of life is making a comeback!
There are now traditional horse-powered (unmechanised) farms in Devon, Durham, Cambridgeshire, Hampshire and Wales. Possibly more that I’m unaware of atm.
Rest in Peace, John. You kept the flame burning, and now it’s being rekindled 🐴
