It is a rare occasion when The Atlantic prints a Truth truly insightful; yet Walt Hunter’s recent Treatise on how the Pedagogue ought to face the reading Capacities of the modern Student is a work worthy of earnest Regard:

The Thesis is this: that the Teacher shall not accept the modern Student as marred and incapable of studying Difficult Books, but rather shall, by his Authority—make him read.

Most Students possess the Faculty to grapple with difficult Works, but have never been called to the Task, and so have never developed the skill, the Sinews of their Attention remaining flaccid and unformed. Hunter, a most daring Professor, succeeded in compelling his Students to read Faulkner. And why did they read Faulkner? "Because [he] asked them to, and told them it was worth it. [He] said that time was precious, and that [they] needed to take some of it back for [themselves]. So [they] did." He exercised his God-given Authority over them; and they, recognizing the Voice of Command, submitted to his Guidance, followed his Ukase, and succeeded in reading As I Lay Dying—a Tome which many a weaker Instructor would have deemed too arduous for their tender Minds.

The Remedy, for the Multitude of Students, is simply the Exercise of Authority and Conviction! It is the Teacher standing forth and declaring: "I am the Authority; I know this is Good; and I expect thee to do it!"

Reading is Labor; it is Work! And by shifting Standards to align with the shattered and shackled Faculties of the Modern Youth—by refusing to take Responsibility for their Development—Teachers are coddling them into a state of interminable, indolent Infancy, where they are never forced to master their own wandering Minds, never forced to control their own Attention.

Yet, the Essay does have one glaring, abysmal Oversight, a woeful Blindness perhaps resulting from Hunter's desire to protect himself and his peers from Fault. In its early portion, Hunter fixes the Blame squarely on the Mechanical Demons of our age: "We know that tech companies supply the means of distraction. But somehow the blame falls on the young reader."

Nay! For if the Teacher possesses this means of breaking through the Fog—if he can, as Hunter confirms firsthand, compel the Youth to read—and yet the majority fail to utilize it———then it is implicit that Teachers are failing the Children in their Custody. They fail to forge them into proper Adults; they fail to teach them to navigate this Silicon-fettered World, to exorcise those Mechanical Spirits, leaving them shackled by invisible Chains to the Tyranny of the Instant, inevitably to be masticated by the Adamantine Teeth of the Algorithm and digested in the Iron Belly of the Digital Moloch; they fail to teach them to seize back, and hold fast, their own Time.

The Teachers (and also the Parents!) have abdicated their Duty. To neglect this necessary Task—this making of the Child to grapple with Difficulty—is to fail him utterly. Awake! Contribute not to this abject Surrender and Failure! The Educational System stands terrified of its own Authority, refusing to wield its mighty Scepter, which leads, by Definition, to the Neglect of those for whom it is responsible. Embrace your Authority; put it to Use, and provide proper Guidance for the Souls entrusted, by God Himself, to your Care!
