Been learning to make pizza from scratch recently. Absolutely shocking how inexpensive it is compared to getting a restaurant pizza.
A place I know in Illinois that is pretty excellent but still reasonably priced sells a 12 inch for $12. Pizza Hut has a 12 inch for $16. Papa John's has them going for $14 a pop. Domino's sell them for $10 each. Want something fancier? $20 at California Pizza Kitchen, or maybe you prefer a $24 12 incher from Grimaldi's.
Anyways... A simple dough for a 12 inch takes about $0.50 of bread flour, and maybe $0.05 for the totality of water, yeast, salt, oil, and sugar (don't even need the last two) if you're extremely unthrifty.
Toppings... Let's imagine you're using a homemade sauce crafted from expensive ingredients... That'll cost you about $0.25. 6 oz of cheese? Heck, let's make an Italian sausage pizza with double cheese and double sausage compared to the normal, everyday recipes. That will be $3 for cheese and $1 for sausage.
About $5 in total. Half the cost of Domino's, could probably be even cheaper if you buy in bulk, and will taste a heck of a lot better. Heck, you can match the higher end places with that price with a little practice and know-how. Plus, you gain greater customization and quality control while developing a useful skill.
