**GST hike on textiles: The issue, industry pain and government’s rationale...!!**

The Centre’s notification to hike GST rates for several textile and apparel items from January 2022 has come as major blow to micro, small and medium-scale textile and clothing units, with industry groups asserting that the move will push up prices for consumers.
In a bid to address inverted tax structure in the man-made fibre (MMF) textile value chain, the ministry of textiles has notified the uniform goods and services tax (GST) rate at 12% on MMF, MMF yarn, MMF fabrics and apparel. Changed tax rates will come into effect from January 1, 2022. Prior to the change in tax structure, the GST on MMF, MMF yarn and MMF fabrics were 18%, 12% and 5%, respectively.

Roller Printing 🎨

Roller printing, also called cylinder or direct printing, method of applying a coloured pattern to cloth, invented by Thomas Bell of Scotland in 1783. A separate dye paste for each colour is applied to the fabric from a metal roller that is intaglio engraved according to the design. The technique can be used with almost any textile fabric.
This was introduced in an attempt to reduce the cost of the earlier copperplate printing. It gives higher production than other printing methods.

The Indian Army has partnered with the National Institute of Fashion Technology to design new combat uniforms for soldiers which will be unveiled for the first time during the Army Day Parade on January 15

The new 'Battle Dress Uniform' design for the Indian Army features disruptive digital patterns and have been developed with the aim of being comfortable to wear in different kinds of terrains. Due to security reasons, the newly designed fabric will be issued to army units directly and will not be available in the retail market
The Indian Army plans to issue an open tender to both the private and public sector businesses for the mass manufacturing and supply of the uniforms. The dress will be distributed to the army's 13 lakh personnel.

The new uniform will focus on lightweight, technical textiles as opposed to its previous Terrycot but it will retain its classic colour palette of greens and earth tones. Rank designations and belt styles are expected to be changed. The Indian Army's uniform has been changed three times before, most recently in 2005.
