Pavel Durov Explains Why Telegram Was Temporarily Removed from the App Store
Pavel Durov has shared Telegram's side of the story after the app was briefly removed from Apple's App Store. According to him, attackers uploaded illegal content by editing an old message in a public group, making it difficult for moderators and group members to notice and report.
Durov claims this was part of a takedown extortion scheme, where bad actors plant illegal content in public groups and then report it to Apple in an attempt to get apps or communities removed unless owners pay them.
Telegram says it removed the illegal content quickly, and Apple restored the app within hours. Durov also warned that platforms hosting user-generated content could face similar attacks if app stores act before contacting developers.
While Apple hasn't publicly confirmed all of Durov's claims, the incident highlights the growing challenge of content moderation and coordinated abuse on large online platforms.
